Actaea, The Nymph Of The Shore

 We begin today with The Little Water-carrier, an 1863 painting by William Bell Scott

Here we have an unknown British artist, circa 1830. The painting is titled View On The River Wye.


Man On A Rope was painted by Honore Daumier, circa 1858-60.


Actaea, The Nymph Of The Shore is the title of this 1868 work by Frederic Leighton.


The Dark Night is a 1907 painting by David Muirhead.


Here we see Henrietta Skerrett Montalba, an 1882 painting by Princess Louise, the Duchess of Argyll.


And today we conclude with this morbid work. Salome With The Head Of John The Baptist was painted circa 1895-98 by Jean-Joseph-Benjamin Constant. We'll return to this series after the theme day.

The Salutation Of Beatrice

 We begin today with Jacobina Copland, by Henry Raeburn, circa 1794-98.


General Foy is an 1825 portrait by Horace Vernet.


At Fontainebleu, Sand And Oaks In The Sun is by Camille Corot, dating to the 1840s.


Here we see The Old Park At Saint-Cloud, circa 1831-32, by Theodore Rousseau.


Another painting by J.M.W. Turner. Mercury And Argus dates to 1836, using mythology as its subject.

I finish today with The Salutation Of Beatrice, by Dante Rossetti, painted in 1859-63, using the story by the poet Dante as its inspiration.

The Countess Tolstaya

Elizabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun painted Countess Anna Ivanova Tolstaya in 1796, during the artist's exile from France.


Landscape With Castle dates to the 1830s, by Georges Michel.


John Hoppner painted John Hookham Frere in 1806.


Sir Alexander Mackenzie is a portrait by Thomas Lawrence, depicting the fur trader who went up the  Canadian river that now bears his name to reach the Arctic Ocean, and then travelled across the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, a decade before Lewis and Clark.


Another giant of history. The Tomb Of General Brock, Near Queenston, Lake Ontario depicts the final resting place of Isaac Brock, the British general who was gunned down in battle at Queenston Heights during the War of 1812. Today the monument is still to be found there. The painting by Thomas Cole dates to 1830.


This is an oil painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner. Shoesburyness Fisherman Hailing A Whitstable Hoy dates to 1809.


Salisbury Cathedral From The Bishop's Grounds is a beautiful 1820 oil painting by John Constable.

Bacchus And Ariadne

Here we have Vulcan At His Forge, a 1750 painting by Pompeo Batoni.


Charles Meynier painted Wisdom Defending Youth From The Arrows Of Love in 1810.


Ernest Bioche de Misery is the impressive name of this impressive painting. This 1807 painting was done by Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Trioson.


We finish today with Bacchus And Ariadne, an 1821 oil painting by Antoine-Jean Gros, evoking the old myth.
