Vastness Of A Land

 Continuing on where I left off yesterday. Lake Superior is a 1928 painting by Lawren Harris of the Group of Seven.

Harris painted Coldwell Bay, North of Lake Superior around 1923. His fellow Group member Franklin Carmichael painted Port Coldwell in 1928.

Another Carmichael painting: Snow Clouds is from 1938.

Sarah Robertson was influenced by the Group. This is Joseph and Marie-Louise, dating circa 1930.

Girl And Cat is a 1920 painting by Emily Coonan.

This one speaks to me. Lilias Torrance Newton painted Portrait Of Ethel Southam (Mrs. F.H. Toller) in 1938.

She also painted Nonnie around 1920.

Girl In Yellow Sweater is a 1936 portrait by Prudence Heward.

And I finish today with Edwin Holgate, another member of the Group. Nude In A Landscape dates around 1930.

The North Shore

 Autumn In Algoma is the title of this 1922 painting by J.E.H. MacDonald of the Group of Seven.

November is a 1922 painting by A.Y. Jackson, also of the Group.

Two paintings by members of the group. At top is MacDonald's Mist Fantasy, dating to 1920. Below it is Pic Island, Lake Superior by Arthur Lismer, from 1927.

Lismer painted The Big Rock, Bon Echo in 1922.

October On The North Shore, Lake Superior is another 1927 painting by Lismer.

Here we have three paintings by Lawren Harris of the Group. Lake Superior was one of his favourite places, and throughout his career it would come up time and again in his work.

Pic Island, Lake Superior is from 1924.

North Shore, Lake Superior dates to 1926.

This sketch by Harris is titled Lake Superior, Sketch, no. 63. It dates to 1926.

The Jack Pine

Three masterpieces by Tom Thomson are hung together. The Pool is from 1915-16.

Burnt Land is a 1915 painting.

And this is The Jack Pine, one of the ones he's best known for, done from 1916-17.

Georgian Bay is a 1913 painting by Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven.

One last look at this big space.

Afterglow is the title of this 1914 painting by Florence McGillivray. While not of the Group, this painting suits its neighbours well.

Another Thomson: Pine Island, Georgian Bay, done from 1914-16.

The Fire Ranger is a 1921 painting by Franz Johnston of the Group.

I finish today with a sculpture. Passing Rain dates to 1928-29, and is by Elizabeth Wyn Wood. 

Thomson

 There is a collection of these field sketches by Tom Thomson gathered together. Thomson, along with the various friends who would later call themselves the Group of Seven, would paint on these small canvases directly in the field and then transfer their ideas to a larger canvas in their studios.

This painting is a Thomson. Moonlight was done over the winter of 1913-14.

Spring Ice is a 1916 painting by Thomson.

Here we have two sketches that would later be transferred by J.E.H. MacDonald into a final work. 

Gleam On The Hills is a 1921 painting by MacDonald, based on the two 1918 sketches above.

Close by, another example of the mixing of indigenous and mainstream art.

Spirit Of The Forest- Mother Nature is by John Marston, dating to 2013.

This display case includes intricate bead and needle work by indigenous artisans.
