Dramatic Works

We begin today where we left off in the Baroque Room at the National Gallery. Jacopo Bassano painted The Departure Of Abraham For Canaan circa 1570.

An Offering To Pan is by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, done between 1645-60.

This sculpture is by Bernini. Maffeo Barberini, Pope Urban VIII is a bust, circa 1632. As the pope was a friend and patron, it allowed Bernini access to him, and the result feels quite human- with stubble and age wrinkles here and there.

The Crucifixion Of Saint Andrew was done in the 1650s, and is the work of Luca Giordano.

I close out today with Alfonso Altoviti, a marble bust circa 1630 by Antonio Novelli.

Baroque Room

 The Baroque Room is off the main corridor of these galleries, and one of the visual treats in the building. This large space contains several large paintings and sculptures, most of a religious theme, but some historical or mythological.

Let's have a look at some of them. Landscape With A Woman Washing Her Feet is by Nicholas Poussin, dating to 1650.

The Abduction Of Europa is by Guido Reni, dating circa 1636.

And The Repentant Magdalen is by Veronese, dating to 1565-70.

The Serpent

 We begin today with these, from the workshop of Dieric Bouts, circa 1485-95: Diptych Of The Sorrowful Mother And Christ Crowned With Thorns.

Lucas Cranach the Elder painted Venus around 1518, depicting the Roman goddess of love.

A rather morbid painting that always draws my attention. Eve, The Serpent, And Death is by Hans Beldung Grien, and dates to 1510-15.

Christ And The Adulteress is another work by Cranach, done in 1533.

Barthyl Bruyn The Elder painted Christian von Conersheim and His Wife Elisabeth von Brauweller in 1544.

The Crucifixion, circa 1515, is a painting by Quinten Massys.

Magdalen

 We begin today with The Virgin And Child On The Crescent Moon, by Franconia German, done around 1500.

The Magdalen comes from the circle of Jorg Lederer, circa 1520.

This limestone work is titled Virgin and Child, by an unknown artist, thought to date to the late 15th century.

The Virgin And Child With Saints is an altarpiece by Benozzo Gozzoli, dating back to 1476-77.

Here we have a marble sculpture, The Virgin and Child, circa 1485. This is by Gregorio di Lorenzo.

Finishing off for today, here we have The Christ Child And The Infant John The Baptist, circa 1490, from the workshop of Botticelli. 

World Art

 Here we have a view from the upper floor balcony out through the windows of the glass tower of the National Gallery.

Nearby is this contemporary sculpture by an American artist. Wagon I is a steel work of art by David Smith, done from 1963-64.

Inside the world galleries, a look down into the garden courtyard.

Most early art that still survives is of a religious nature, and as is such with the collection at the Gallery. Here we have Blessing Christ, done circa 1500 by a follower of Bellini.

St. Jerome In Penitence is the title of this canvas by Bartolomeo Montagna, dating circa 1500-07.

In a display case is this Italian plate, dating to around 1500.

The Crucifixion is the title of this dramatic painting attributed to Jean Penicaud II, done circa 1500.
