For Spiritual And Physical Renewal

Here we have a look at the boathouse on Kingsmere Lake.

With the door open, I went inside. A canoe, fishing rods, and displays are found inside, with the open water directly below.

This lake speaks to me.

I took another panorama.

Back up the slope I went.

One more look behind me.

And finishing today with this view of the guest cottage at Kingswood.

A Balcony Overlooking Life On The Lake

More looks today inside the main cottage of Kingswood at the Mackenzie King Estate.

Stepping out onto the balcony, more display panels. Of the losses Mackenzie King sustained during a handful of years, it was the death of his mother that hit the hardest.

The path beyond leads to the lake. Note the Union Jack on the flagpole.

A look at this side of the main cottage.

And the sundial. Hints of the lake can be seen through the trees.

Down the slope to the lakeshore, with this small building painted in the estate colours.

Kingsmere Lake took its name before Mackenzie King first saw it, as I've mentioned. On the far side of the lake are more cottages, grandfathered in from the time of the creation of Gatineau Park.

The boat house was close by.

A Man Left In A State Of Deep Melancholy

Mackenzie King suffered a number of losses between 1915-22. His parents, a brother, and a sister died, and the losses weighed heavily on him for the rest of his days.

The main cottage is very much a home in its sensibility.

This is the living room, which includes a day bed, desk, and other comforts. Mackenzie King would have spent much of his time working from here.

His bedroom was ordinary and austere, but he would have spent little time in it aside from sleeping.

This old wood stove caught my eye.

This was the kitchen as expansions were completed at Kingswood, where staff would have been at work to serve Mackenzie King and his guests. The staff member I spoke to said they've named the cutout here Olive.

Cottages Surrounded By The Influence Of Nature

A look out the windows from the guest cottage at Kingswood.

Art on the walls.

The path seen here leads down to the lake.

A glance towards the main cottage.

Displays look at both of the cottages.

One more look at the guest cottage for today.

And then over to the main cottage. A staff member was present.

When Mackenzie Kings' mother came to visit, this was her room.
