The other temporary exhibit going on at the Museum of History is called River of Dreams, and focuses on Impressionist artists around the St. Lawrence River valley in Quebec. I love impressionist art, so of course I spent time here. We begin with The Port of Montreal, by Maurice Cullen, a 1915 painting.
Marc-Aurele de Foy Suzor-Cote painted Smog, Port of Montreal in 1914.
Saint James Cathedral, Dominion Square, Montreal is the title of this work by Cullen, painted around 1909-12.
Another Cullen work- Winter Evening On Craig Street, dating around 1912.
This is his work Blizzard, Craig Street, Montreal, a 1912 oil painting.
Saint Patrick's Church, Montreal is the title of this 1916 work by Robert Pilot, whose stepfather was Cullen.
Suzor-Cote painted Viger Square in 1912.
This is Old Houses, Montreal, by Cullen, dating to around 1908.
For today I finish with Knitting, by Henrietta Mabel May, a 1915 painting.

I especially love ❤️ the Craig Street paintings.
ReplyDeleteThey stand out.
DeleteHave you ever done a walk photographing some of the views we can see in these paintings?
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't been in Montreal in years. The odd time in the past I've taken a historical photo and done a contemporary view of the same spot.
DeleteNice paintings
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWonderful art. I lived for a few years in Québec City and winter was always more picturesque than anywhere I have lived before or since, especially in the small towns along the St. Lawrence River.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Delete...snow adds magic to the paintings!
ReplyDeleteIt does.
DeleteWonderful winter scenes.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteWhat amazes me about these is how the impressionist artists were out there in freezing weather capturing the snowy views (all but the last one!) I wonder how many short sketches they brought back to slightly warmer studios where they painted.
ReplyDeleteAnd these guys had real winters compared to those in France.
DeleteThese are really lovely, William.
ReplyDeleteLovely series of impressionist paintings ~ thanks, ~ awesome river too of course ~
ReplyDeleteWinter weather features in art. Good subject.
