Mixed Shots

Here we have a couple of smaller sculptures, carved on the second weekend of Winterlude, on Sparks Street.

For whatever reason, this large sculpture from the first weekend held out pretty well during the festival.

The same applied to the Louis Riel sculpture.

I liked the way the old bank was lit up during Winterlude.

This small sculpture was done during the second weekend. Unlike the others, which were carved, this one incorporated painting into the artistic process. Here we have it at night and in day.

At another location a few blocks away on the second weekend, there was a Fire and Ice party, tied into Winterlude, and organized, I believe, by the same people who do Glowfair in the summer. I missed it, but this countertop, made of ice, was still on the spot when I passed by a day or so later.

Back to Sparks Street for daytime views of some of the sculptures. Tomorrow we turn our attention to the Rideau Canal skateway.

Illuminate

Here are some more angles on the ice sculptures, lit up at night. On the second weekend of Winterlude, sculptors from North America did carvings down the street. I'll show you those before we're done with the series.

I decided to work with a filter and render the above shot as a black and white.

And then I turned my attention to that mastodon.

Again, I edited one shot into a black and white version.

Colours

Tim Hortons is one of the usual corporate sponsors for Winterlude, and this year on Sparks Street, an ice sculpture included a giant coffee cup.

This first sculpture of the competitive works was done by two Latvian carvers.

This one, which suffered some damage due to exposure, was done by a Russian duo.

This is the work of a pair of carvers from the Philippines.

Two French sculptors were behind this.

And this was the work of a sculptor from France and a sculptor from Poland. More from here tomorrow.

Carved

Here we have a close up of the ice sculpture I left off with yesterday.

And a different angle for it.

And here we have that sculpture that held up quite well under the circumstances.

This one, however, had lost forearms before I'd photographed it this day. I went for closer details instead.

And this last one, which appeared to have lost some of its structure, but still looked interesting.

One last view, looking east. Tomorrow we'll take a look at them lit up at night.

Fragile

I have more of the international ice sculptures on Sparks Street during Winterlude. Of the ones done during the first weekend of the festival, this one held up the best.

This one, however, lost arms along the way.

This one held up better.

Here we have a view from the other side of the sculpture in my third shot. I'll pick up with this tomorrow.
