When I go to the Museum of Nature, I start on the top floor and work my way down through the galleries, which are all off this central atrium. On the top floor, the special exhibit gallery is on the far side; the most recent exhibit had closed a few days before my visit. The Bird Gallery, usually on this level, is at present being moved down to the third floor, so I'll visit that the next time I'm in.
Stepping out from here into the Queens' Lantern gives views of the atrium from the other side. When the museum was originally built, there was a stone tower here; a few years later most of the tower had to be removed, as there were unforeseen problems with the soil beneath the tower. With the last renovation, the glass tower mimics the original, but is lighter. It presently features a large jellyfish hanging from the top, and features good views up Metcalfe Street, which leads right up to Parliament Hill.
That great hall with mezzanine reminds of Honolulu's Bishop Museum's Hawaii Hall!
ReplyDeleteAlways fascinating visiting museum, this is not unlike the Natural History Museum in London...
ReplyDeleteThat jellyfish is very special hanging there!
ReplyDeleteLove all the different perspectives. Happy weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the perspective in all these photos, William!

ReplyDelete@Cloudia: it is great architecture.
ReplyDelete@Geoff: I would enjoy visiting there.
@Marianne: and quite noticable, even from outside.
@Halcyon: thank you!
@Linda: thanks!
@Janey: a lot bigger than they usually get to be.
@Beth: thank you!
Lovely buildning, I like the perspectives you took.
ReplyDeleteThe building is much larger than I first thought and very intriguing. I wouldn't want to run into that jellyfish or its cousins on one of our Florida beaches! Yikes!
ReplyDeleteInteresting perspectives, William.
ReplyDeleteThat jellyfish is big, fortunately not real... :)
Nice view up Metcalf . I see there has been major renovation inside but the outside is pretty grimy. The inside has really been brightened up.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots William!
ReplyDelete@Orvokki: thank you!
ReplyDelete@Lowell: certainly not!
@Karl: if they got that big, they'd be real trouble!
@Red: I imagine it's the day I took the shot- it was dreary, gloomy weather, and late winter/ early spring tends to be drab to begin with. I was never actually in this museum before the renovations- something I now wish I'd had the chance to do.
@Luis: thanks!
Very nice views from that tower.
ReplyDeleteThe building has interesting designs especially the large jelly fish.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, that one with the things coming down. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteI was straining my eyes looking for the jellyfish in the first few pics- then there it was! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteI like that large jellyfish. Great place looks like.
ReplyDeleteThat jelly fish is very weird!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteA really amazing place!
ReplyDeleteThose are indeed great perspectives. I love that giant jellyfish.
ReplyDeleteNow I love that glass part seen from the inside and the jellyfish is fab! The architectural details are all very nice!
ReplyDeletei like your details.
ReplyDelete@Sharon: and better on a sunny day!
ReplyDelete@Nancy: for a good while it was a whale in there.
@Whisk: cool, huh?
@Terri: thanks!
@Denise: and much more to come.
@RedPat: wait til you see the Water Gallery.
@Norma: it certainly is.
@VP: I quite agree.
@Jan: so do I.
@Ciel: I think that the glass tower is best appreciated from within.
@Tex: thanks!
Interesting shot of the "JellyFish"! Love the shots of the windows! I've started a new blog for random photos that are my personal favorites!
ReplyDeleteWhoa! The jellyfish sure was unexpected. :-)
ReplyDeleteLoved the arches, but a jellyfish?
ReplyDeleteInteresting that there is a jellyfish hanging up there! Unfortunately having grown up near the ocean, I have experienced some rather unpleasant encounters with real jellyfish while swimming. I like this kind of jellyfish much better!
ReplyDeleteTotally weird jellyfish sculpture!
ReplyDelete@Chieftess: I will look for the new blog.
ReplyDelete@Revrunner: I find it cool.
@Mari: it seems to suit the space.
@Lois: I wouldn't like that.
@Furry Gnome: but cool!
Nice pix but that jellyfish looks downright scary!
ReplyDeleteThis must be the first time I have ever seen a jellyfish sculpture - and hanging dramatically from the ceiling no less. Love the arty design of the atrium.
ReplyDeleteNeat windows! Nice job on capturing them.
ReplyDeleteI like the way the lights are featured in the top photos.
ReplyDeleteI must have been sometimes, even with students, but I cannot recall!
ReplyDeleteI'm posting this on the 19th April (in the future :) after doing a little catching up. Have to comment here, William. All of these images are fantastic.
ReplyDeleteOh such a delight to see all this. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYour blogs are so interesting.
@Cheryl: and the jellyfish is still there. I think now it'll be a permanent fixture.
ReplyDelete@Gemma: I do as well.
@Linda: thank you!
@Jack: thanks!
@Jennifer: you should visit sometime.
@Lauren: thank you.
@Carolann: you're welcome.
