Older And Newer

Carrying on with where I left off yesterday. The Canada Life Building was built between 1929-31 as a headquarters for the insurance company. It is in the Beaux-Arts style.

Historic plaques caught my eye as I went along the street, including this one.

This house stands nearby. Campbell House dates to 1822 in the Georgian style, and was moved here to its present location. It was built for Upper Canada Chief Justice William Campbell and his wife, and today houses a local history museum.

On the grounds outside Campbell House are stone fragments of old Toronto, derived from buildings being demolished back in the 1960s and 1970s.

A short walk away I took in a good viewpoint of a newer iconic piece of architecture, the CN Tower. This view is from Queen Street, one of the larger east-west streets in this part of the city.

Heading back the way I came, this building caught my eye. The Rex is a jazz and blues club along Queen.

What Kind Of Vehicle Is That?

I was passing through the Byward Market one day and happened to notice these two vehicles parked side by side. They're three wheeled hybrids called Slingshots, with a belt drive, a mix between car and motorbike. I've never seen anything like them before, though they are made by a company that specializes in ATVs and snowmobiles. They were drawing attention from others too.

City Daily Photo Theme Day: Celebrating Summer

The first of each month is City Daily Photo Theme Day. For the first of July, the theme is Celebrating Summer. You can find other takes on this month's theme by clicking at this link.

Summers here tend to bring out the motorbikes on our roads. This government office parking lot down in Little Italy is one that I've shown you before in the winter, and this time of year, motorbikes can be found on it, including this three wheeled Spyder.

Most of the motorbikes are in the same area on this lot.

The Hello Kitty decal is a nice touch on the one in the foreground below.

The motorbike in that link above is also here, below, being driven in the proper season, still with the sidecar attached.

There was a small paddle attached to the sidecar, with a rather peculiar set of words inscribed on it. It's readable, I assume, if you click on it.

Now then, today is also Canada Day here in Ottawa. I will be downtown through much of the day among a horde of crazy Canucks, so I'll have to play catchup tomorrow. Have a look at my writer's blog for my annual Canada Day post- I have it scheduled to go live at the same time this one does. In the meantime, I'll leave you with a picture fitting for the day. This is taken on the east side of the Rideau Canal, with the War Memorial, Parliament Hill, and Plaza Bridge all before us. Happy Canada Day!
