The Grim Reaper

This pickup truck was also part of the display of cars; it was covered with skulls, bones, and grim reapers. It even had the name Grim Reaper along the sides. One certainly would not forget this one easily.

Taking In The Cars

Antique and sports cars do seem to draw the attention of people, as you can see. To finish tomorrow, we'll be paying attention to one vehicle in particular.

Classic Automobiles

One weekend back in late August I happened across some classic and sports cars in the Byward Market. I have more of these in the next couple of days. To my fellow Canadians, Happy Thanksgiving! And to my American readers, have a good Columbus Day.

McCrae And The Falls

Amid the other memorials placed on and around Green Island, here where the Rideau River splits into two waterfalls, is this recent monument to the Canadian warrior poet John McCrae, who penned In Flanders Fields during the First World War. It's a marvelous photo subject.

Heading west off the island gives us views of the west branch of the Rideau Falls as it spills into the Ottawa River. This time I got a rainbow as a bonus.

A Visit To Rideau Falls

After my time in New Edinburgh, I stopped at Rideau Falls, where the Rideau River tumbles into the Ottawa River. The park here offers great views of the falls, and both sides of the Ottawa River. There are two branches of the falls here, with Green Island between them; this first post features the east branch. And if you want to see these falls in action, check out this video I took that day.

The park around the falls features several monuments, most of them military in nature. This one on Green Island commemorates Allied pilots killed on training missions in Canada through the Second World War. And even though this was Labour Day, as you can see in the concluding shot especially, a couple of the trees were starting to turn colours. I'm planning on coming back to the area on Monday- odds are those trees will have lost their leaves by now, while the rest will be turning. I have more from here tomorrow.

Totem, Inukshuk, And Gates

Departing from Rideau Hall, I stopped by the totem pole on the grounds, as well as the inukshuk. Both are good First Nations additions to the properties, in among the many ceremonial trees planted by dignitaries down through the years.

Here we have the front gate to the property, with its gatehouse. Most members of the public tend to come in through here, as the visitor centre is close by.

The front gate shares nearby neighbours- Rideau Gate is the street beside it, and this house is one of the three buildings facing the property.

The South African High Commission is another, and between it and the above house is another official residence, 7 Rideau Gate, used for visiting dignitaries.

And across from the front gate of Rideau Hall is the front gate for 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the PM. As noted in an earlier blog, the house is under renovation at the moment, and tends to be a bit difficult to see from the road anyway. This is the gatehouse for the property.
