Today is Remembrance Day in Canada, and Armistice Day and Veterans Day elsewhere. I am also touching on the subject over at my writer's blog today. At 11 in the morning on this date in 1918, the guns of the First World War fell silent, and four years of bloody war came to an end. The country's service of remembrance is held here, at the National War Memorial. I took these fall shots on the last day of October.
Military sentries stand at post in front of the Memorial, which occupies the very heart of Confederation Square, and is surrounded by landmarks like Parliament Hill, the Chateau Laurier, the National Arts Centre, and The Chambers. The Memorial commemorates those who have died in military service, particularly the wars, and was first dedicated in the months preceding the Second World War.
At its foot is the most sacred place in the country- the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

DeleteMy generation "will remember them" because our grand fathers had so many stories to tell.
ReplyDeleteBut will our children even know when WW1 was? Will our grandchildren know what the Shrine of Remembrance is and what the red poppies stand for?
The importance of education, particularly history.
DeleteBeautiful photos of these monuments. Hope you have a good Remembrance Day. It is Veteran's Day here in the U.S., but the holiday is for the same reason.
