Pink Lake

My last stop for this sojourn into Gatineau Park was at Pink Lake. I had other commitments later in the day, so a hike around the lake was out of the question. But I wanted to stop at the outlook along the parkway.

The outlook is a two level wooden structure. Interpretive plaques tell the story of the lake, which is a treasure in and of itself.

Pink Lake is named after a family that lived here in the 19th century.

It is a meromictic lake- a rarity in the world where the layers of the waters do not mix. Below a certain depth, there is little to no oxygen. The result is a lake with a complicated but fragile ecosystem.

The history of the lake is spelled out here. Once thought to be polluted because of a green colour that comes into its waters in the fall (actually caused by algae), it was actually found that the lake's issue is about erosion. Steps have been taken since to rehabilitate and protect the lake from erosion issues, including from time to time reconfiguring the hiking trail that goes around it.

It is a beauty.

  5. What a lovely stop at Pink Lake! The meromictic nature of the lake is fascinating, and its unique ecosystem sounds like something truly worth protecting. It's interesting to hear about the history of the lake, from its past misconception as being polluted to the ongoing efforts to preserve it. Even without a full hike, the outlook gives such a great view and insight into the area’s natural beauty and history. Thank you for sharing this part of your journey!
