Odds And Ends In The National Capital

I have some odds and ends today, taken from the last few weeks. One day in October, I was at Lansdowne Park, where this antique fire truck was found.

The reason for it being here- a charity fire truck pull.

At the end of October I had reason to be at the RA Centre, an athletic facility south of the downtown core. Paintings inside caught my eye.

In early November, en route to the War Museum, I took this shot of the Dominican University College, a graduate institute focusing on theological studies.

Coming back, I noticed a cat looking out from a windowsill. I took some shots of this supreme being.

Later in November, I was at Lansdowne Park one night. I took a shot of the Orion constellation in the sky.

Elsewhere in the Glebe, an eyeglasses shop has this in their front window.

I've been monitoring the progress of Adisoke, the future home of the main branch of the Ottawa Public Library at Lebreton Flats. The building will also house some space for Library and Archives Canada, and is coming along nicely. This was from mid-December.

I passed by again on Christmas Eve.

A few days earlier, I had gone into Gatineau to pay a visit to the Canadian Museum of History. The architecture of these buildings caught my eye.

Coming back, I took this shot in Major's Hill Park, looking towards Parliament Hill and across the Rideau Canal.

And these were taken a couple of days ago, on a rare blue sky day downtown. I've featured them before, but it's been quite awhile. The murals face each other across an empty lot on Bank Street. The ghost sign in the second shot dates to the 19th century.

Last Colours

 One rainy morning, I was at Lansdowne Park, where the bright colours of these trees stood out.

This includes views near the stadium.

Early one morning I passed by Central Park, further north in the Glebe, and took this shot looking east.

Twice a month I go out to the Portage Bridge to photograph the view downstream towards Parliament Hill. I took a couple of extra shots with the zoom on my phone this time.

From rough waters to calm waters. This is the Rideau River where Bank Street crosses it, taken on a day I was going to a spot nearby.

The red here along the riverside caught my eye.

Closing in on my destination, the buildings in the background, I took this shot of Canada geese. Probably the last of the season.

Another day at Lansdowne was much more sunny, with these showing well in the early morning light.

The Aberdeen Pavilion always makes a good backdrop. So too does the Moon in the sky.

My last formal fall shot. I was on my way to the Canadian War Museum and took this staircase that descends part of the same cliff that makes up Parliament Hill. The looming building at the top is the Dominican University College. 

Aftermath

The day after yesterday's post I was out to go to Little Italy and took some shots as I went along. Here we see a small channel of the Ottawa River below in the ravine. You may remember I featured it at the end of last month, photographed from a bridge on the other side. The river is swift enough in this channel that it remains open until it rejoins the main body of the river.

Nearby is the national Canadian Firefighters Memorial.

My path led me on. These two street views include a large stone building on the high ground. That's the Dominican University College, which has a focus in degrees on theology and philosophy.

Snow piled up alongside the streets here is waiting to be taken away by crews that usually start circulating after the roads have been cleared by the plows.

We got quite a bit out of this storm.

I wanted a shot of the texture of a snow pile. This suited me.

Continuing on, the Plant Bath is a community centre where Little Italy and Chinatown meet. A statue is out front commemorating the Vietnam boat people.

And this is a church in Little Italy, St. Hyacinth, a Roman Catholic parish that ministers to the Polish community.

Church Architecture In Day And Night

I have several churches for today. This is the Catholic parish Sagrada Familia, over in Old Ottawa East, near the Rideau Canal. A sculpture of the Virgin Mary is near the front steps, behind glass. A date inscribed near the front door indicates that the building dates to 1958.

One evening I was passing by the Garden of the Provinces and Territories. Two churches are found here and were lit up. Christ Church Cathedral, an Anglican church, is this one.

Its neighbour is St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

The sanctuary, which I've featured before in Doors Open visits, includes beautiful stained glass windows. This one, lit from within, hangs over the altar.

I finish with these three churches in Chinatown, taken one afternoon in September. The Chinese Christian Church of Ottawa is this one, occupying a building north of Somerset Street, the main route through the neighbourhood.

St. Luke's Anglican Church is on the south side of Somerset, a short walk away. 

This view from the east side shows more of the church. In the background, the bell tower at Dominican University College is visible.

And on the north side of Somerset, across from St. Luke's, is Christ The Saviour Orthodox Church.
