Four Letter Word

My esteemed partner in crime Norma thinks that snow, winter, blizzard, and frost constitute obscene language. Winter was late getting started here, with our first significant lasting snowfall coming between Christmas and New Years Eve. We've had snow off and on since, and these shots are from around my neighbourhood, Old Ottawa South, as well as a couple in the Glebe. The two churches, Sunnyside Wesleyan and Southminster United, are both in Old Ottawa South. And these shots are actually the first I took in 2016.

  2. Wonderful snow, not it is not obscene language, rain is and I really get fed up with it, much prefer snow & ice in the winter like we had when I was a kid. Some great street scenes William

    @Linda: thanks!

    @Bill: rain is needed but is a nuisance to be out walking in.

    @Tomas: I expect snow to be rare for you.

    @Marianne: it took long enough to show up.

    @Nancy: thank you.

    We had also the winter late here, but now we have a lot of snow.

  11. What a lovely older neighbourhood and beautiful stone churches. We are in blizzard mode here today. Nasty!

  12. Great winter scenes, William, you seem to live in a nice oldneighbourhood.
    We have only had three days with freezing rain so far this winter, but in the coming days it should get colder with some frost and snow. I'm longing for it!

  13. I love looking at these snowy pictures, I just don't want to be there in it. I don't do well in cold at all.

  14. Many here thinks like Norma, and this kind of weather is quite rare here!

  15. Your snow may be late but when you get sow, you get lots of it.

  16. @Janey: thank you!

    @Luis: we do tend to get proper winters up here.

    @Karl: finally!

    @Tanya: in your part of the continent this amount of snow would be catastrophic!

    @Orvokki: we had more of it yesterday as well, and apparently it's in the forecast again over the next few days, though at present we've got sunny skies.

    @Norma: I do, but it empties out regularly in the interests of chocolate!

    @Pamela: it blew out late in the night here, but yesterday saw a good deal of snow falling.

    @Jan: it is a pretty nice neighbourhood.

    @Sharon: I love the cold.

    @VP: this weather is something I can't get enough of.

  17. Brrrr that's a lot of snow! You may be tired of it, but the sceneries look beautiful :-)

  18. I like the snow too. Here we get snow and then it warms up and we have slush--that I don't care for. A few years ago we got snow that stayed and stayed and it was wonderful.

  19. Sure looks pretty in that first snow. We haven't had ours yet.

  20. Goodness! You've got a lot of the white stuff.

  21. You have more snow than we do, that's for sure. I don't mind snow, in fact, I think it's beautiful. But I'm not fond of driving on roads that haven't been plowed yet. ;)

  22. Great pictures, and I remember it well...thank heavens it is a distant memory.

  23. For Norma snow is indeed a four letter word.
    William you live in a lovely winter wonderland of snow.

  25. We got a bit yesterday but no where near as much as you have. Looks pretty!

  26. We only have to get a smattering of snow and the country grinds to a halt

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Tamago: rest assured I won't get tired of it.

    @MB: when we get January thaws it doesn't wipe out a whole snowpack, and it tends to last a short time.

    @Denise: snow in Virginia can pose a challenge!

    @Halcyon: we tend to get a healthy amount of snow over a winter. We do have to catch up though!

    @EG: walking can be difficult when the sidewalks tend to get plowed last, too.

    @Linda: but snow is a good thing!

    @Parsnip: it really is a winter wonderland.

    @Beth: and no doubt more of it to come.

    @RedPat: and we didn't get near as much the Maritimes is getting out of the last storm, but it was blowing around a lot in the night.

    @Ciel: more to come!

    @Lauren: so do I.

    @Gerald: apparently the same was the case in the Netherlands; a storm in the 60s shut down the whole country, since the only plow was at the airport.

    @Annette: it is a good amount, but we need more!

  28. we have been super lucky this year as far as the weather is concerned, so no obscene language from me!!

  29. It looks beautiful but I hate it too. We haven't had any snow or ice yet but that may be about to change in the next few days.

  30. Love all these snowy scenes. The little church set in snow is quite magical.

  31. I always get a pang of envy when I see snow pictures, it's so good for makin pictures but so infrequent here...

  32. I love the last picture. It shows snow at its coldest. Blue shadows always look really, really cold!

  33. Thanks William for showing these snow scenes from your neighborhood. We haven't had a lot of snow here in Nashua, NH, so far this year. Last night we did get a few inches that allowed us to go on our first snow shoe walk today and then another is planned for Friday. The local parks & Rec Dept runs this free program and all that's needed is to show up and have your equipment. We DO enjoy the four letter word...snow!

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Gill: but it's so much fun!

    @Jenny: we were quite late getting started, so it was about time!

    @Gemma: both churches stand out nicely. I've photographed Southminster more often between the two.

    @Geoff: it's a common thing here.

    @Janis: that was early one morning. I photographed that park last year as well in the winter.

    @Beatrice: snow's a great four letter word!

    ReplyDelete
  35. It looks pretty to me, but I imagine it does get old.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, technically we got our first measurable snowfall last night. But if so, there was nothing of it to photograph this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It looks as if you got enough to be at least somewhat gratified.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Snow sounds like a 'lovely experience' four letter word :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Red: we did get a lot of it!

    @Mari: but it's so much fun!

    @Lois: cold is good for you.

    @Revrunner: that happens in your part of the continent.

    @Kay: oh yes!

    @Grace: it is.

  40. We have so little snow, yet lots of places to put it! We're the rock in the river, and it dissipates, the Lake Effect Snow, from traveling across the province.

  41. Nice series, it looks a bit like it has looked around here. I love the contrast of color in your second shot. I have to say though that when I saw the photo of the Sunnyside Church the first thought that came to my mind was, man that is one hermaphrodite piece of architecture. Generally I enjoy the mixing of architectural designs but I don't think it worked so well with that one.
