The Lantern

A reminder to members of City Daily Photo: the theme day for May 1st is Smell.

Here we have a look out from the third floor balcony through the framed arch to the Queens' Lantern.

Going into the Lantern again, there are a number of panels on the building, its history, and the collections it has housed. The fact that former prime minister Wilfred Laurier lay in state here after his death was notable; it's suggested by some that his ghost still haunts these halls.

Moving down to the second level, stained glass caught my eye. Down on the second floor, this part of the Lantern is open, and used for various activities. The museum can be used for private occasions, such as weddings. A plaque can be found down here as well, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010, and so the Lantern is named in honour of both Victoria and Elizabeth.

  9. Gothic castle? Now I know why it looks so fancy. The addition certainly adds a new style with lots of light.

  11. Especially love the stained glass...find it fascinating... as I'm also drawn to kaleidoscopes.

  12. @Janis: thanks!

    @Beth: the staircases in the Lantern really stand out to me.

    @Jennifer: this museum in particular is really worth coming to see.

    @Red: it does have quite a number of architectural influences.

    @Linda: thank you!

    @Sharon: it stands out well- and is even reflective. I was outside when she and the Duke were here- when they left by car, the car passed me by a few feet, and I could clearly see both of them. That's likely the closest I'll ever come to the Royals.

    @Linda: stained glass always appeals to me.

  20. @Nancy: I do too.

    @Tamago: I'm a sucker for stained glass!

    @Halcyon: I've already taken some shots for the occasion- since the tulip festival is coming up, tulip beds seem appropriate!

    @Pamela: it is a wonderful museum.

    @Gemma: when they renovated this place, they did wonderful work.

    @Ciel: the architecture firm that was involved in the refit really knew what they were doing. I think, if memory serves, it was a firm I've featured here before.

    @RedPat: indeed.

    @Revrunner: it is.
