Wandering Through Hintonburg

Another reminder to members of City Daily Photo: the theme day for the first of May is Smell.

Around the beginning of the month I went up to the Hintonburg neighbourhood early one evening. It is dominated by this Catholic church, St. Francis of Assisi (Paroisse Saint-Francois D'Assise in French, which is the dominant language used here, as the church website is in French). When I lived in the neighbourhood, the church bells were a regular sound.

This nearby apartment building though is new; there was a car dealership where it now stands.

There must have been a large scale road infrastructure project here at some point; sculptures like these line the street. The city compensates neighbourhoods for the inconvenience with public art. These two stand a short distance apart, the second one in front of a community centre.

Lastly, this mural dominates a wall on the side of a store.

  2. Things are looking so gray in these photos. At least that mural gives a splash of color!

  3. At the end we left the museum, but..., yes, more educated. (Just kidding).

  5. Nice to have art to cheer up on a grey day. I love hearing church bells.

  6. That's some church! I like the idea of the city giving back to the citizens for putting up with new construction...that doesn't happen in very many places.

  7. Love the old church building, the new apartment building doesn't look so appealing, a bit earthbound.

    @Tomas: thanks for stopping by.

    @Bill: it is rare for me to come here.

    @Ciel: I do too.

    @Lowell: it is standard here.

    @Marianne: true. I think it is that exterior bars that caught my eye.

    @Janis: it might well be.

  15. Infra structure seems to become more "invasive"...for example high speed transit.

  16. @Mo: it was cool that day, and it's cool this morning!

    @Luis: I should really try going in that church sometime.

    @Norma: this one has lovely bells that you hear a long way off.

    @Grace: the church has no doubt been there a long while.

    @Tex: that they are!

    @Sharon: so did I. It must be relatively fresh.

    @Red: in this case it involves a lot of tearing up of the roads and replacing piping and other stuff. It turns a street into what looks like a war zone. They're doing it at present over in Old Ottawa East.

    @MB: the mural was quite a surprise!

    @Nancy: thank you!

    @RedPat: I like the church as well.

    @Denise: it's such a headache dealing with that sort of thing while it's going on.

  29. @Marleen: I certainly liked that mural.

    @Revrunner: I should have looked for something about the artist. I imagine if it was anywhere, it would have been in the community centre.

    @Mari: I think modern art is an acquired taste.

    @Lois: it certainly is.

  30. The church is a grand one, very tall. And, I appreciate public art and especially like the one that looks like part of a fiddle.

  31. It looks like a great neighborhood. The "newer" building is kind of an eyesore when compared to all the historic structures. The church is an awesome building.
