City Daily Photo Theme Day: Tired

The first day of each month is a theme day for members of City Daily Photo, and for February, that theme happens to be Tired. You can see how others are interpreting this theme here.

For my take on the theme, I decided to think outside the box and focus on something I could never be tired of, but which some of my readers might feel that way: winter. I don't know why anyone could tire of it, I mean, it's a perfectly beautiful, lovely season with all the cold and the snow and the frost and the... oh, I suspect at least someone is visualizing my brutal death in an avalanche right about now, so let's get on with it.

This was taken in Barrhaven in December on a snowy day, with one of the main roads in this area passing beneath a railroad track.

On another December day, I photographed the Rideau Canal from the familiar vantage of the Bank Street Bridge, looking east. The ice was covering everything at this point, but it wasn't open to skaters yet.

Further south, and on a day late in December, I stopped where Bank Street passes over the Rideau River, and photographed looking west. The river mostly closes up over the winter here, but beneath the bridge, enough open water remains that ducks congregate here through winter.

And on another late December day, I passed through a number of landmark areas downtown. It was cold and a light snow was falling. Coming to the area around the National War Memorial, I first photographed the National Arts Centre, then the Memorial itself.

I headed up past Major's Hill Park, where I took this shot looking towards Parliament Hill.

Further on, I wanted this view of the National Gallery of Canada.

And I took this view of Notre Dame Basilica, with the Peacekeeping Monument in the foreground.

I finish with a shot from another day in late December, when I did a tour of Centre Block on Parliament Hill. A view outside a window before the tour began took in this snowy courtyard. Grumblings, rants, and death threats from winter haters may commence at your leisure in the comments.

  2. I'm tired of winter. We only had one day of beautiful snow and the rest has been just bland.

  3. Wonderful snowy photos! Love the ones with blue sky!

  4. People around Greensboro are even saying they are tired of winter. And, our winters are tame compared to those in Ottawa. Happy winter, William.

  5. Wonderful shots William.. I'm with you, I don't think I'd ever 'tire' of winter either 😊 Excellent take on the theme.

  6. I used to enjoy the snow, but as I get older, I enjoy staying at home in the warm a lot more! It all looks so pretty through the window.

  9. Hello, I am not a winter lover at all. I like Spring, Summer and Fall. I could be very happy just to skip winter.

    I must say that the snowy winter scenes are pretty to see, your photos are beautiful. Happy Thursday, enjoy your day!

  10. The muted light of winter causes problems for me. I am glad someone enjoys winter though, William.

  11. Some days in winter can be nice but I'm not thrilled by it in general.

  12. I never get tired or bored looking at such wonderful winter shots.
    Overhere in the Netherlands we haven't had any winter at all this year, but the forecast looks quite promising for next week.

  13. I sleep entirely too much in winter. I guess it's the urge to hibernate.

  14. Oh I know you love snow and you sneaked in some snow shots by showing several outstanding Ottawa features.

  15. Acho fantásticas essas imagens de espaços recobertos de neve mas acredito não me adaptar para viver num ambiente tão gélido.
    Tenha um bom dia William

  17. Interesting take on the theme. I like winter too, but I live in Florida and I might feel differently if I lived further north.

  18. @Eileen: it's my favourite season, but I know a good many people are not in favour of it!

    @Marie: I know some people have that seasonal down period.

    @RedPat: I can't get enough of it.

    @Jan: hopefully your forecast is right.

    @Norma: some people have that tendency!

    @Red: it felt quite appropriate for the occasion, and I know at least one other person thus far has gone for weather for this theme.

    @Gracita: thank you!

    @Sharon: yes, and we're all nuts.

    @Lois: our winter and yours are quite different!

  19. I don't get tired of looking at your winter photos, but you don't get tired of winter? Really? I'm already tired of winter and I live in Florida! :)

  23. Won't hear any complaints from me. We could use the snow as we are in the midst of one of the worst January droughts we've ever experienced here in the DMV.

  24. Great take on the theme. While you never tire of the snow and such I am tired of rain rain rain--we seldom get snow so seldom have the privilege of snow ops.

  26. @Lowell: I love it.

    @Cloudia: it is the best of all seasons.

    @Bill: it is celebrated in these parts.

    @Beth: that's the one drawback- grey days.

    @Revrunner: at present looking out the window, we're getting more snow.

    @MB: that's the Pacific Northwest for you!

    @Lady Fi: thank you!

    @Jenn: I'll miss it in July when it's hot!

  27. I miss proper winter with snow and freezing temperatures. We've had two days snow this winter and it melted almost straight away.
    I love shots with the canal of course.

  28. William, I'm glad you love winter. It's a tough choice but someone's gotta do it and better you than I. I definitely am tired of it sooner than you.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm in perfect agreement with you, William. But do notice that i don't live at the same northern latitude as you. But I do love the snow and cold probably more than unrelenting 100+ degree days in the summer. Obviously, i like your I terpretation of the theme.

  30. Since we live a life of perpetual summer, the only ice we see is in a glass full of drink! For us, your photos are difficult to believe, we don't tire of them either! Sunshine Coast Daily Photo - Australia

  32. So glad you are not tired of your winter, William, since you don't have a choice about it. :)
    Keep on enjoying the snow!

  33. Well you can count me as another fan of winter weather, William, and it's why we moved from the south here to New England. Of course, when it is nasty outdoors, I can view the snow from my apt window, so perhaps that adds to my enjoyment in not having to be out in it!

  34. @Klara: I love winter.

    @Kay: I can never get tired of it.

    @Susan: and your climate is somewhat different from ours.

    @Biting Midge: we can get some hot summers, but we're rewarded with cold winters.

    @Catalyst: but it's the best kind of weather!

    @Carol: thank you!

    @Dina: thanks!

    @Beatrice: true!
