Four Weddings And No Funeral

"I've got a new theory about marriage. Two people are in love, they live together, and then suddenly one day, they run out of conversation." ~ Gareth
"Uh huh." ~ Charles
"Totally. I mean they can't think of a single thing to say to each other. That's it. Panic! Then suddenly, it occurs to the chap that there is a way out of the deadlock." ~ Gareth
"Which is?" ~ Charles
"He'll ask her to marry him." ~ Gareth
"Brilliant! Brilliant!" ~ Charles
"Suddenly they've got something to talk about for the rest of their lives." ~ Gareth
"Basically you're saying marriage is just a way of getting out of an embarrassing pause in conversation." ~Charles
"The definitive ice breaker." ~ Gareth

Today I finish this series from the wedding show that was held in the Convention Center in January. There was a lot to see, from clothing to place settings- enough to make me grateful I'm not planning one of these. Good lord, that's a lot of decisions and work.

This was a display from a bakery out in the Orleans area that specializes in wedding cakes. These were mock ups of their work.

This large photograph from a wedding photographer caught my eye, because the background looked familiar. The Mississippi River (ours, not the American one) flows through the town of Almonte southwest of Ottawa, spilling over these rocks as the Grand Falls. The angle for the photograph is one that's less commonly seen than many views of these falls- the photographer told me she was on an upper platform looking down at the couple, hence the different perspective. Most people will photograph from down where the couple is.

Amberwood Lounge & Eatery is another place specializing in hosting weddings. It's out in the Kanata-Stittsville area, and is relatively new.

Coming back out of the hall, I paused by this large mirror and the displays out in the promenade before taking my leave of the building. It was certainly an experience, not to mention ideal for the photographer to get some shots in. I hope you've enjoyed this look at this event.

  1. Goodness! I've never had to plan a big extravagant wedding. I don't even like going to them.

  2. ...this all looks too complicated to me, my sweetie and I had a simple wedding 50 years and she is still my sweetie!

  3. I have enjoyed it William, always nice looking at pretty things. Weddings are big business these days, I still think smaller, more personal weddings are better and you aren't left with huge debt afterwards. That's cynical moi 😀

  4. Bells and whistles. Commercialism. You have a good post on one of my least favorite topics.

  7. Looks like a great event for someone planning a wedding. Planning my daughter's wedding was very stressful, so I'm glad I never have to do that again!

  13. I never knew you had a Mississippi River too! That's why I love blogging -- learn something new every day! The cake looked good enough to eat. I wonder if it was real or a fake!

  14. That was an interesting insight to a booming business. Way too many decisions to make, I'm glad our wedding was very simple.

  16. I enjoyed all four of these posts -- contrary to my initial expectations as I am among the camp who think big showy weddings are a terrible waste. But ... this event sure was fertile ground for photography and you took some great ones ... I would never have thought of so much going on at an event like this ...

  17. You illustrated how easy it is for couples to spend a huge amount of money and create a mini-economic boom just by getting married.

  18. I still think our wedding was the best: an out of the way spot in a state park, 13 people, a couple of animals, wrote our own vows, and married ourselves. Potluck lunch afterwards. No enduring debt load.

  19. The Mississippi River in Canada. What's this world coming to? I have done wedding photography in the past when I developed the film in my darkroom and did all the photo work under an enlarger and a 36 shot roll of film took hours of horribly hard labor. And then the mother of the bride would say she wasn't happy with this or that, and the mother of the groom said she wasn't happy with another this or that. One woman demanded I give her all of my negatives and I had to explain that no, that's not how the process works because she would have a ton of other images made from those negatives and I'd be out in the cold. She was furious and told me I wasn't a good Christian! I don't much like weddings nor do I like all of the planners that work hard to put together an unnecessary party that breaks the bank of the newly-weds.

  23. @Mari:true!

    @Kay: that sounds good.

    @Lowell: a bit smaller than the Mississippi that's best known!

    @Jennifer: that's true.

    @Klara: thanks!
