Canada Day In The NAC

I stopped at the National Arts Centre on Canada Day. The glass enclosure that was added around much of it was opened up last year on that date, and it was busy this day.

This view looking out takes in the Chateau Laurier and the government Conference Centre.

This view is from within the glass lantern overlooking Elgin Street, taking in Parliament Hill and the War Memorial. The lines you see on the glass are inscribed logos for the NAC, breaking up the glass in a way that minimizes bird strike. These windows are lit up at night with projections of light and imagery, as you'll see below.

There were a lot of activities going on in the building through the day (though curiously enough, not the usual orchestra concert). In this room while I was here, two dancers were showing their stuff while house music was being played.

Down in one of the lobby areas, a jazz band had just finished a set.

These are my last shots taken on Canada Day, after the fireworks were done. I passed by the fully lit up lantern, which was illuminated by fireworks. The windows double as image screens when the sun goes down, displaying images from across the country, NAC performances, and other things like Canada Day fireworks. Tomorrow we'll start looking at the museum visits I made on this day.

  6. That's a pretty dramatic way to display events. The fireworks shown here make it look like there is fire inside the building.

  8. Visiting and photographing the Ottawa area must be a full time job! You do well at it.

  9. @RedPat: it does. I don't know how they work- there's no obvious wiring visible in the glass, so the glass itself must convert into screens automatically when the system comes online in the evening.

    @Janey: the place was busy!

    @Sharon: it does, yes.

    @MB: I didn't photograph the jazz band while they were playing- they were just finishing up their set- but they were good.

    @Red: it helps that there are days like this when I can get a whole lot of shots in. I'll be filling out the rest of the month from shots taken on this day.

  15. Wonderful pictures
    Live dancing is a treat to watch. The night photos are fantastic. Night lights in summer are a favorite.

  16. @Marie: it certainly is.

    @Jeanie: I saw these dancers and knew it would be ideal to photograph them. I've occasionally photographed dancers, but different music styles in the past- swing or tango. House music brings with it a different kind of dancing.

    @Laurie: it is quite a building to explore.

    @Jennifer: I've been backstage a couple of times, which I find fascinating.

    @Carol: thank you!

    @Maywyn: I enjoyed stopping in here.

  21. Great views. And what an interesting way to use those windows at night. It turns the glass into a form of performance. Nice!

  24. Those windows doubling as screens with the reflections of the fireworks/lantern are amazing! What wonderful pictures. it sounds like this would be an amazing place to visit on any day of the year (you mentioned most of the time there is an orchestra playing!)....but what a fabulous show for Canada Day. Wonderful.
