Christ Church Cathedral is the most prominent Anglican church in Ottawa. With its roots stretching back to 1828, the church is nearly as old as the city itself. The present building, in the English Gothic style, was built in 1872-73. It was designated as the seat for the diocese and given cathedral status in the 1890s.
Out front is a life sized sculpture by the Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz, who has a number of homeless Jesus sculptures like this, as well as another that I'll show you at the next location, around the world.
From here I went inside.
Here we have a view down the main aisle of the sanctuary.
Stained glass windows are to be found throughout.
I decided to photograph the ceiling. This would have done quite nicely for the Brown theme day later in the year.
Many of the stained glass windows along the sides of the sanctuary are memorial windows.
This one stands over the loft at the back of the sanctuary. I`ve been close to it, but not this time.
More of the windows. I`ll pick up here tomorrow.
William - the homeless Jesus sculpture is very moving. This is new to me and I like it very much, if that is an appropriate way to describe it. I am currently doing some volunteer work with a home for unaccompanied homeless high school students, so this really resonates with me. I hope you are enjoying your June!
ReplyDeleteThe sculpture sure made me a tad sad as we have real people here like that. Don´t they feel offended, I wonder...
ReplyDeleteNice shot of the ceiling.

ReplyDeleteInteresting how the architect has given a few subtle tweaks to the Gothic style while still remaining faithful to the overall feel of an old English church.

ReplyDeleteI am wondering about the name Christ Church, Christchurch...did the Anglicans name the city in New Zealand or maybe this is just a common term? I suppose I could google....but, well, this is better. :)
