Stained Glass

Doors Open Ottawa was on the 1st and 2nd of the month, part of a program across the province in cities and towns opening up buildings to public visits from late April into early October. Ottawa had more than a hundred sites involved in this year's event. I didn't get to as many sites this year as in previous years, but got in a good many photos along the way. Today I'm starting with St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church. This is one of two churches that overlook the Garden of the Provinces and Territories downtown.

The congregation was founded in 1910, and its present building, in the Gothic style, dates to the 1950s. Quilts were to be found throughout the sanctuary.

The stained glass throughout the sanctuary is the work of one artist, Russell Goodman, done between 1985-1993. Their focus starts with the history of the Lutheran church in Canada.

Then the windows move into the life of Christ.

The last window focuses on music. There are many churches in Ottawa with stained glass windows, but I find these particularly appealing.

Here I have one wide view of the sanctuary.

I departed from the church, photographing from the west, where a church hall adjoins the sanctuary. I was on my way over to the neighbouring church, which I'll show tomorrow.

  1. I like that quilt - not an item you have over here.
    The glass art is wonderful, too. Amazing how they did it back then.

  2. I love stained glass and the quilts too ...
    I thought the windows were high but I see that they are low ... the whole building is different from a church here.

  3. The stained glass windows are really lovely - beautifully captured by you too.

  4. My wife is a quilter and certainly would have enjoyed this visit.

  5. That's some wonderful stained glass, managing to combine both a traditionalist approach and a modern feel. And you've photographed it superbly - I know from experience how difficult a subject such windows can be!

  6. ...what a treat to be able to see the interior, I wish that we had an open door program.

  7. stain glass windows are always a moment to enjoy. ( ;

  8. Everything is beautiful , the workmanship amazing, the stain glass is so beautifully mastered and the quilts, some talented crafts people for sure. I really admire the interior paint colour of this church, so warm and inviting,

  9. I love the stained glass windows. We have found a lot of lovely artisans using the techniques.

  10. Lovely stained glass windows. I like your new header photo too William.

  11. Hello,
    Love the beautiful stained glass. A lovely church and photos. Wishing you a happy day!

  12. @Iris: quilting seems to be a regular thing in the Lutheran church, as I understand it.

    @Ella: yes, the windows are generally speaking at eye level.

    @Francisco: thank you.

    @Rosemary: thanks!

    @David: no doubt.

    @John: they can be quite a challenge, but somehow this church's windows are quite cooperative with the photographer.

    @Jan: that they are.

    @Tom: I would recommend that if your area has something like a heritage department or the like, to suggest the concept and point out that it's done for years on end in Ontario.

    @Beth: that they are.

    @Laurie: I like it too.

    @Jennifer: stained glass appeals to me.

    @Anvilcloud: definitely!

    @Sami: thank you.

    @Eileen: thanks!

  13. I love the stained glass, too. And I quite agree that those three are wonderful. Thanks for sharing this artist's work with me. :-)

  14. Love the simplicity of the church and the beauty of the windows.

  15. Those stained glass windows have some really vivid colors and easy to identify a window in a church should be.

  16. Interesting that this building is still in use and is well maintained.

  17. @DJan; you're welcome.

    @Marie: it's a contrast to its neighbour, which is designated a cathedral.

    @Barbara: that's quite true.

    @Maywyn: definitely.

    @Red: I like it.

  18. The colors in that stained glass are so vivid and brilliant. Beautiful.

  19. Beautiful, I love stained glass windows !

  20. Very colorful stained glass windows! Quilts are very colorful and lovely, too.

  21. Sure Like The New Banner Photo

  22. These are beautiful stained glass windows, William. I didn't do as many places this year for Doors Open either.

  23. Just beautiful. I do not know if the church is still Lutheran, but quilting is still done by many Lutheran women.

  24. Amazing and beautiful stained glass windows.

  25. A lovely church. Stained glass sure makes for beautiful photos!

  26. @Sharon: I agree.

    @Karl: so do I.

    @Tamago: thank you!

    @Padre: thanks.

    @RedPat: hopefully next year.

    @Mari: it is certainly done here.

    @Bill: that they are.

    @Jeanie: definitely.

  28. Doors Open gives us a great opportunity to visit some buildings that we would not visit otherwise... which is not the case of churches, of course.

  29. The stained glass windows are so beautiful, St Peter's is a lovely church William ✨

  30. What a colourful church, walls, windows and quilts - very unusual and yet welcoming too:)

  31. The stained glass windows are just wonderful to see.

    All the best Jan

  32. You did good job with your pictures inside the church. It's always hard to catch good light.

  33. @Carol: thank you.

    @Kay: it is, yes.

    @Catarina: I missed it this year.

    @Grace: it very much is.

    @Rosie: it does feel that way.

    @Jan: thank you.

    @Klara: it can be.
