Dragon Boats Crossing A Cold Finish Line

Here we had the last of the dragon boats to cross the finish line for this heat.

The rest of the teams were starting to get out of the boats, so that the next set of teams could take to the boats. You must be slightly daft to do this, but it's a hugely popular event, in terms of participation, both in the winter and the summer versions. I've seen more of the winter version, however, and that's not likely to change. Tomorrow we return to ice sculptures.

  1. Their shadows are long and I imagine it's cold!

  2. ...heats in racing is a common term, but it seems a bit out of place when you are racing on ice.

  3. The sillier an event is, the more people join in; there must be a message there somewhere.

  4. You need to have fun in that cold! Well done!

  8. Looking at the thick clothing and the clear sky, it seems to be very cold.

  9. Speaking of heat (previous post) I imagine the exertion could warm a body up, even on a frigid day. Could be tough on the watchers though.

  10. Kudos to the participants and the hardy souls who stood there watching.

  11. There are many people braver than I am to take on the challenge in the cold.

  12. I think this would be much more fun to watch than do!

  14. @Linda: very cold.

    @Tom: it does!

    @John: possibly!

    @Iris: thank you!

    @Ella: one way to think of it.

    @Nancy: people do enjoy watching.

    @Francisco: thank you.

    @Jan: it certainly was.

    @Anvilcloud: it was. I had one glove off for taking photos, and I had difficulties with frostbite afterwards.

    @David: definitely!

    @Marie: they did good with it.

    @Jeanie: less physically taxing, anyway.

    @DJan: you're welcome.

  15. There must be a lot of hot drinks consumed afterwards!

  19. Yes, cold. I'm warm because I'm viewing your race in the comfort of my home. You must be daft to go outside and stand around when there is snow and ice everywhere. ;^/

  20. @RedPat: there would be.

    @Sharon: definitely.

    @Carol: it was!

    @Red: true!

    @Catalyst: cold is a good thing!

    @Maywyn: that it is.

  22. It was interesting to see this Dragon Boat Festival taking place on ice. Denver, Colorado, has an annual Dragon Boat Festival but it takes place in summer and it is quite a big event with many other exhibits and food, etc.

  26. If I had nothing to do but sit in the boat, I could enjoy the sport.

  27. William - I have heard of (and seen) dragon boat racing, but never on ice. How cool is this? (Perhaps literally!) I had to watch a few videos to understand how they propel themselves. Fabulous. Thanks for introducing me to this terrific event!

  30. The boats look wonderful on the ice:)

  31. Exciting to see these I'm sure, William, but it does look so cold to be out on that ice and to be honest not sure this event would be something I would be attending.

  32. 😀

    I suppose when everything is frozen for a big part of the year you find ways to have fun anyway!

  33. @Magiceye: thank you.

    @Joanne: there's no just sitting in one of these boats. Even the drummer is doing something.

    @Angie: it's quite something to see this on the ice.

    @Kay: very much so.

    @Rosie: definitely.

    @Beatrice: it was cold.

    @Klara: it was indeed.

    @Sandi: that's true.
