The National Gallery has several works by the artist Cornelius Krieghoff, who was born in the Netherlands and died in the United States, but lived and painted for many years in Canada in the 19th century. White Horse Inn By Moonlight is an 1851 painting.
The Chaudiere is an 1858 painting that depicts the mighty Chaudiere Falls, upstream from the National Gallery, as it would have looked at Krieghoff's time.
Two paintings are exhibited together. The first is The Saint Anne Falls, an 1855 oil painting.
The second is The Passing Storm, Saint-Ferreol, dating to 1854.
I have seen a few of his paintings at the AGO. I don't remember now if they were part of a permanent exhibition.

ReplyDeleteWe’re having intermittent wind storms here and the “Passing Storm” painting captures the feeling of it very well... (not that I’m outside, but i can see the trees moving and the weird sky color that the artist depicts.
