The Colonel Amid Colours

Major's Hill Park is another tulip site. This statue of Colonel John By, the military engineer who led the building of the Rideau Canal and is considered the founder of Ottawa, stands in the park, overlooking the Ottawa Locks of his canal down below. Tulips were growing in the beds around and behind him.

Here the Connaught Building and Chateau Laurier can be seen in the background.

From the far end of the bed, the statue of Colonel By has a view across to Parliament Hill.

I stepped out to the east entrance of the park, where planters could be found. This has more of a view of the Connaught Building. The headquarters of the Canada Revenue Agency, the building was designed by architect David Ewart, who also designed the Museum of Nature and the Royal Canadian Mint. The building construction started in 1913, and is in the Tudor-Gothic style.

This view to the left takes in its neighbour, the American embassy.

One more look at the planters, and I went back into the park.

Close by in this shaded spot there were the odd tulips that were clearly replanted by other gardeners. Of the nut hoarding, furry tailed variety.

More planters could be found on the west side of the park where the path overlooks the Ottawa River.

Today I'll leave off with these yellow tulips in the shade. Tomorrow we'll have a look at tulips on the north side of the park.

  9. Brilliant title, "The Colonel Among Colours." Love these photos, especially the last one, the way the black bark frames the yellow tulips on the left!
