Dubai Ice

Today Winterlude comes to an end here in Ottawa and Gatineau for another year. It's a public holiday in Ontario called Family Day (a totally fake and pointless day off, mind you...), and it's the last chance to take in the sights. Though I've taken plenty of pics this year, so we're going to be immersed in ice and snow sculptures for awhile.

Here is the second mermaid sculpture in Confederation Park. I've also taken pics of these statues at night fully lit, and those shots will be forthcoming.

You might remember my mentioning a few days that a carver from the United Arab Emirates had carved an ice sculpture here. This is his work, a crocodile.

I wanted a shot of the beast's head.

This last one is from a Mexican carver, and has a Native influence on it.

Moving off into other aspects of Winterlude for a bit, but we'll be back in the park.

  1. I had never heard of family day! The crocodile is amazing, no wonder you wanted a close-up of it! I really like the Mexican's sculpture, it's gorgeous!

  2. And it's Presidents Day in the States, also a holiday. Not sure many people really celebrate this day other than to go to the store sales... or just relax... which isn't that bad. Anyway, another set of beautiful sculptures !

  4. Family day means families don't have to go to work?

    More superb sculptures. Sounds the "artists" come from all over the world for this event. You are fortunate.

  8. Ciel: the attention to detail is remarkable.

    Stuart: a handful of Canadian provinces have this one but not all.

    Mo: they certainly are.

    Norma: just as long as it is not the real thing!

    Lowell: yes, it is quite a multinational collection of carvers.

    Halcyon: there is a lot to come.

    Jane: it is similar here.

    Londonlulu: thanks!

  10. I'm always amazed at what people can do with ice. We had an ice sculpture for our wedding. The people who make them charge a lot of money for their work.

  11. I've enjoyed your latest series of sculptures as I even more than I am enjoying this fake and pointless holiday.

  12. So pretty! Do they repeat the same sculptures at different venues so they polish their skills? I wonder if the designs are patented.

  14. @Country Gal: thank you!

    @Sharon: yes they are.

    @Stephen: that doesn't surprise me.

    @Hamilton: thanks!

    @Linda: I imagine they probably go more for unique with each time they go to another venue, but keep photographs in a portfolio.

    @RedPat: you must!

  15. Wonderful art works, William!
    Are Italian artists also there?

  16. Grand ice sculptures and I loved the one of the crocodile, especially as I saw many of his cousins in Florida recently. I've heard that crocodiles are a bit more bad tempered than alligators, though they both seem pretty formidable to me.

    @Linda: they are.

    @Annette: you're welcome.
