First Baptist Church is downtown, with its origins dating back to 1877. It is built in the Gothic Revival style, and was attended by Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie, who worshiped here when he was in the city. Mackenzie in fact laid the cornerstone for the church.
interesting windows.
ReplyDeleteA rather sober church. I like your new header.
ReplyDeleteA nice looking church with attractive windows. Very attractive header!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful stained glass windows William.. Super fab new header shot.. it's about time I changed mine :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a lot fancier than our "Southern" Baptist churches! It's quite a beautiful structure! I love your new header shot, too!
ReplyDelete@Tex: they are, yes.
ReplyDelete@Marianne: it has a lot of dignity to it.
@Bill: thank you!
@Grace: I like to change my header based on the season, and it was time. The header image was taken last year at the Ottawa Rowing Club during Doors Open, which I've visited again this year.
@Lowell: I think it fits in quite well with a lot of the churches here of that period, which were built in Gothic styles.
Utilitarian is the word that comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteGreat detail. I like your new header. You must have picked it just for me since I like the bridge.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, and I love your new header, William. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the old stained glass windows. Our church (170 years old) has stained glass with German inscriptions.
ReplyDeleteQuite a simple and sober church, I like that style.
ReplyDeleteVery spartan compared to Catholic churches.
ReplyDeleteIt is a wonderful old church, not as grand but beautiful nonetheless.
ReplyDelete@Sharon: which probably fits with the denomination.
ReplyDelete@Red: I tend to pick from the year before for a new season, as was the case with this. I decided I wanted one from this location, where I first visited last year for Doors Open, really giving a sense of both sides of the river.
@Linda: it was about time, even though it meant saying goodbye to that tulips shot.
@Linda: I should have gone up to the balcony- I didn't this time. The stained glass up there is done in a very Ottawa Valley way, with a lumberjack and riverman flanking Christ on either side. I have featured it before.
@Jan: I do as well.
@RedPat: some Catholic churches can be quite over the top.
@Denise: it is. It has a lot of character.
Solid WASP values in stone and wood!
ReplyDeleteI like the white walls with the dark ceiliing and the unusual light fixtures.
ReplyDeleteIt is simple and straightforward but still elegant. Are those organ pipes above in the 4th shot?
ReplyDeleteGreat history!
ReplyDeleteFanciest Baptist church I've ever seen. Most that I've seen are rather plain. Those in the East, I understand, that belong to the American Baptist church can be more elaborate. The Southern Baptists are following suit.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful church. Inside looks rather simple and I like it!
ReplyDeleteHi William, I love your header. I like the outside view of the church building. Have a great Sunday!
ReplyDeleteBeeindruckende Orgel und schöne Fenster.
ReplyDeleteGruß
Noke
i enjoy the stain glass & the lighting, so interesting. different. ( ;
ReplyDeleteI always love the photos of churches!
ReplyDelete@Cloudia: indeed!
ReplyDelete@Janey: it makes a distinctive sanctuary.
@Kay: yes, the organ is on the balcony.
@Revrunner: it has a lot of history.
@Mari: I don't know the organization of Baptist churches but assume the ones in Canada are their own organization.
@Tamago: I do as well.
@Nancy: thanks!
@Noke: thank you.
@Beth: it is, yes.
@Norma: so do I.
Thanks. It looked like an organ, and a beautiful one.
DeleteThat last photo is grand.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI love the timber ceilings.
ReplyDeleteSo did I.
