Dawn Arises On A Brand New Year

For my first fresh post of the new year, I like to do a contrast to my final post of the year by featuring sunrise shots. I started doing this last year, and it makes sense to carry on with it. In this first case, back in mid-September, I was awake early enough to catch the dawn, a few minutes before seven. On the Bronson Avenue Bridge crossing the Canal, I first photographed to the west, over Dow's Lake. Then I crossed over to the east side where the waters have narrowed back into the Canal, catching the rising sun at the horizon.

A few days later, with one of those occasional bad nights, I decided to take a walk instead of tossing and turning. Crossing the same bridge over to the Glebe, I caught the first hints of  light to the east.

This was the view a short time later, by the time I reached the north side of the Glebe at this park.

This is from Gloucester, out in the east end from late September, taken on another one of those bad nights.

This, by contrast, was in November, again on the Bronson Avenue Bridge looking east over the Canal.

These were also in November, taken first at Brewer Park and then up at the Bronson Avenue Bridge, a few minutes apart.

  2. It seems, on seeing the photos, that the year begins a little dark, (it's a joke).
    Again, Happy New Year, William!´

  7. Good for you for doing walkies. When I meet Mr. Insomnia, I usually listen to the radio. The CBC night stuff either entertains me or bores me to sleep!

  9. Awesome shots. You had lots of color shape and cloud to play with. I should get up early and find some great sunrises.

  13. Good for you! I'm afraid that sunrise shots will never be a feature of mine.

    Happy New Year!

  14. @Red: at this time of year it's no problem getting up to photograph the sunrise, but that's not likely in July!

    @Jan: thank you!

    @Cloudia: you're welcome.

    @Sharon: they certainly do.

    @Jackie: for me it depends on the time of year.

  15. I wonder if Ottawa is without crime, allowing its citizens to wander fearlessly in the dark night.

  18. @Catalyst: oh there are some places I wouldn't go to in the night! Back in the summer I mused briefly about photographing a crime scene after a late night shooting outside a club.

    @Norma: it's reasonably safe, despite what a certain joke of a "newspaper" would have us believe- that there are gun toting "punks" and "hoods" behind every single street light ready to kill you- Ottawa Sun, I'm looking at you.

    @RedPat: thank you!

    @Tanya: thanks.

    @Revrunner: most nights I sleep well, but every once in awhile, I get bad nights.

    @Bill: thank you.

  26. At least that's one thing we can be sure of William, the sun setting and rising on a new day.. these days it's the only thing we can be sure of ☺ Beautiful sunrises here, merci beaucoup for getting up early to take them!
