Light In The Darkness

Kontinuum is a multimedia exhibition going on in downtown Ottawa at the moment, until the middle of September. A future LRT station, set beneath the core, is the site of a light and music show open to the public; the line will be ready next year, and for this anniversary year, the station is hosting this colourful display. It takes about a half hour to walk through. A visit starts with scanning your own image at a bank of scanners, an image which becomes incorporated into the show at a couple of points later on. Then you proceed on through a dazzling array of lights and colours through the passageways.

The main part of the show is in the station itself, where the tracks are clearly visible even among the dazzling light and rich colours. I filmed a video segment while down here, which you can view here. Walking through the entire show felt like something out of a sci-fi film, like Tron Legacy or the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'll be back to take this in before the exhibit is over, but wanted to give you a taste of it before that does come to an end, so locals who haven't been here yet know about it.

  1. I feel like I'm in a disco! :)

  2. That looks astonishing, William. I'd love to do that. You certainly have some innovative and proactive people making things happen in Ottawa!

  3. That must be an amazing half hour!

  4. Maybe some music by Queen or Moody Blues...
    Artificial lighting can be difficult to capture in a photo, but these are great!

  5. ...thanks for sharing, I wish that I were there!

  6. @Halcyon: I would not have thought of a disco!

    @Marianne: it was fun.

    @Mike: this was a good idea.

    @Marleen: I enjoyed it.

    @Janis: thank you!

    @Tom: you're welcome.

  7. Surreal !
    Great captures, William !

  8. Fantastic images William.. the video is amazing, a little disconcerting though, did it make you feel a little unbalanced 😀

  9. Is it easy to walk through in terms of balance?

  10. This does remind me of my teenage years...disco! Love it!

  11. This is an excellent idea rather than having to look at ugly bare walls. Nicely photographed.

  12. This reminds me in ways of Laserock, a light show set to music that was performed at our Planetarium years ago.

  13. Wow, this must have been fun. I love things like this.

  14. That looks great light show! Must be a fun walk!

  15. That could be a tad hard on the eyes. They certainly are vibrant.

  16. @Karl: it's quite an experience.

    @Grace: not at all- though I did have one point early on when a security guard emerged right out of a brightly coloured light to point me in the proper direction!

    @Kate: I found it easy. In those passages that were darker, there was enough ambient light to move without feeling you were in the darkness, and the light wasn't so overwhelming that it might make you dizzy. It's possible it would have such an effect on someone else though.

    @Maywyn: thank you!

    @Linda: it's quite imaginative.

    @Red: it's a nice way to introduce yourself to the LRT. It's been an ongoing project for awhile, so this was the first time I'd been down there. There is to be permanent art at each of the stations along the way.

    @Norma: I can see that.

    @Sharon: it was fun!

    @Tamago: definitely!

    @Mari: I had no problem with my eyes.

    @RedPat: it was a blast!

  17. That looked like an amazing light show and I enjoyed the video. Thanks William!

  18. How cool to see you own image incorporated into this amazing show!

  19. That is totally amazing. Cool video and photos. Thanks for sharing this, William.

  20. @Denise: it was quite something. Very creative.

    @Christine: I'll have to see if I can find mine the next time I go in.

    @Janey: it did, I thought. Very appropriate to the displays.

    @Revrunner: me too. A very rich blue.

    @Bill: you're welcome.

  21. I'm blown away by this William. What a great culture you have there

  22. Gosh this is amazing, love your photo's, such colour.

    All the best Jan

  23. so pretty. reminds me of a drawing i use to do as a kid ... oh can't recall the name? but you would draw really cool detailed circles and other designs ... i guess i could google it ... i am curious??! so fun! ( ;

  24. This is very otherworldly. It reminds me of a 1960s style light show. Very colorful and cool.

  25. Wow, that's quite a show. I think it would make me rather dizzy, standing there ...

  26. Wonderful light show. Great series.

  27. @Linda: it really is!

    @Cloudia: I've enjoyed this. I went in again on the weekend, and I'll go in once or twice more before it's done.

    @Jan: it is quite a show.

    @Beth: Kaleidoscopes, I think.

    @Kay: it was fun to go see it.

    @Jan: I wonder what it would do to someone prone to seizures!

    @Klara: thanks!

    @Jennifer: something for you to keep in mind if you happen to be in town.
