The Abbey Within The Clearing

I carried on with my walk. This view looks up the slope towards the house at Moorside. The second shot is taken a short walk away.

I carried on in the direction of the paths leading towards the fenceline. Another folly was beyond the fence.

Another quote by King forms a sign alongside the path: "let no word or thought enter there which was not the holiest and best."

The Abbey is the folly found here in the clearing amid trees. King acquired bits and pieces of older buildings in Ottawa over time and had this assembled here. It has the look of an old church ruin, and it is a marvelous subject for the photographer- especially in fall.

  1. Oh, is that part of a chimney? Beautiful!

  2. Beautiful place. Interesting to find the abbey in the midst of the park.

  3. impressive collection of stone from the past!

  4. Even an old Abbey, certainly not so old then ours near Waterloo it's dated from the 10th century !! ! The Catholics have been or are everywhere !

  5. Um belo jardim que fez um bom aproveitamento das ruínas.
    Um abraço e continuação de boa semana.

  8. @Joan: a very sentimental thing to do! He was quite a character.

    @Iris: he incorporated bits of everything!

    @Nancy: it certainly is beautiful.

    @Tom: that's definitely true.

  9. Hello, the Abbey ruins are beautiful. Love the Autumn trees and colors. Enjoy your day and week ahead.

  10. What a great place to wander around with a camera! A lovely park.

  11. I would never have left there if I was him! Fabulous.

  12. This looks like a perfect place for a fall walk. You've made me remember a day a very long time ago back in my home town of Quincy Illinois. (I was somewhere around 20 years old so you know it was a long time ago.) A friend and I decided to go for a long walk to admire the trees. I can still remember the sound of the crunch of the leaves under our feet. That was such a memorable walk.

  13. The fall colours are wonderful again. I think we have the wrong trees in my residence.

  14. Quite the imagination he had. Interesting that he had the idea and got others to do the lifting.

  15. How lovely both bricks and stone look amongst the trees:)

  16. @Eileen: thank you!

    @Marleen: the grounds were looking at their best.

    @RedPat: you really do get the sense that this estate was his true home.

    @Sharon: interesting how one scene can draw out memories of another place!

    @Jan: eastern North America tends to have a lot of climate and soil conditions that tend to result in very good fall colours.

    @Red: he certainly had the vision!

    @Rosie: they definitely do!

  17. How interesting! It does make for good photos.

  18. The abbey is beautiful. A wonderful place to walk and photograph among all the foliage.

  19. Oh, I love how he did the abbey folly. Wouldn't it be fun to do something like that? Very clever and creative.

  20. Wonderful blend of colour and constructions!

  29. There are some gigantic trees on that property. And the colors! Wow, just wow!

  30. Wonderful views! And the fall colors continue to dazzle.

  31. Superb post, William. The colors run with joy and beauty. This man was something else. Thinking about his quote on human discourse, we certainly could use his advice today. And he must have had a great sense of humor - I mean, really - you build a "ruin." That's a very humorous achievement!

  32. The first five photographs are fantastic! Tweeted.

  33. @Catalyst: thanks!

    @Kay: thank you.

    @Lowell: he must have been quite a character.
