Queen

 Today I'm concentrating on this last bed of tulips in the park, lined with muscari. It is dedicated in memory of the late Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. As crown princess during the Second World War, Juliana found safe haven here for herself and her daughters.

Across the road and across from the Dow's Lake  Pavilion is the grounds of a naval reserve unit, H.M.C.S Carleton. Here we have another tulip bed. Tomorrow I go elsewhere, but we'll be back to the lake when I close out this series. Sometime in July.

  3. I will never understand why the kings and queens escaped to safe countries and let their population in the big sh..t (not a ladylike word) The Belgian King wanted to stay but was forced by the population to go away The tulips are really a Dutch speciality !

  5. What a nice surprise to see not only tulips, but also Muscari botryoides. It completes the red, white and blue.

  6. @Parsnip: thank you.

    @John: a fitting tribute.

    @Gattina: as I recall it was officials around the royals who had to persuade them to go. The reasoning being Hitler would have made a puppet of Wilhelmina or just killed her. So Wilhelmina spent the war in Britain able to actively help her people, and her daughter was sent even further off for safety.

    @Iris: alas, only a short time.

    @Jan: the muscari look best from ground level, which I can manage.

  8. It shows you what I know. I thought the muscari would bloom before the tulips and then be done. That is a beautiful tree in the last photos.

  17. I just realized how hard it is to photograph tulips from ground level. You really need something to get you to a higher level.

  26. How appropriate to add a tulip bed in honor of Juliana. I'm not surprised Canada welcomed her during the war. The tulips are a wonderful tribute.
