I left off yesterday showing you some ice sculptures in progress back in 2014. This is another one in Confederation Park, with blocks of coloured ice added on.
Very big snowshoes.
A pair of large ice sculptures lit up at night. These two bears mark the friendship of Canada and a reunited Germany; a maple leaf is on one, and the Brandenburg Gate is on the other.
The Rideau Canal is very much the heart of Winterlude. This photograph is taken from on the Corktown Pedestrian Bridge, which links Centretown on right with the campus at the University of Ottawa on the left.
Down I went to the ice surface.
And a view back at the bridge from the surface.
Further up along the skateway lies the Pretoria Bridge, a unique lift bridge over the Canal with distinctive turrets. It is named after the avenue that traverses it, which in turn was a nod to the South African War.
The Rideau canal as a skateaway is a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh big.
ReplyDeleteWe have a festival where a fake bear is involved.
Ages ago at that time the police got a call, there is a bear. Yah, a bear, we know.
It was a real one!!!! (My home city is near the Harz Mountains and that baer went for a longer walk!).
No bears in Berlin, though, I think.
Great ice-skating pics.
I'm going for your last picture today. Very nice to see all those skaters swinging over the canal.
ReplyDeleteBelas fotografias de Inverno.
ReplyDeleteUm abraço e continuação de uma boa semana.

What a nice place for ice skating ! The sculptures too are nice !
ReplyDeleteYou Canadians know how to make the most of your snow and ice and how enjoy it. If it snowed like that here, I think that our country would come to a grinding halt!!!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteThe ice sculptures are pretty. I love the view of the canal and skaters.
Take care, enjoy your day!
...I love the pictures of the skaters on the canal!
ReplyDeleteI am happy to see the ice sculptures again. I am sure the ice skaters are having a great time skating on the frozen canal.
ReplyDeleteNo las había visto, con anterioridad y ahora puedo admirarlas en tus fotografías.
ReplyDeleteThere is much to enjoy in Ottawa, especially when the streets are clear.
ReplyDeleteGreat virtual walk, especially the skating photos.
ReplyDelete@italiafinlandia: it draws people in.
ReplyDelete@Iris: there are bears in the countryside here, but they don't come into the city.
@Jan: thank you.
@Francisco: thanks.
@Gattina: that they are.
@Rosemary: we get a lot.
@Eileen: so do I.
ReplyDelete@Tom: classic scenes.
@Nancy: they do each year.
@Mirada: thank you.
@David: definitely.
@Gemel: thank you.
Those giant snow shoes would be pretty hard to use.
ReplyDeleteI’ve only taken in some of Winterlude once, but I am glad that I did. I’ve only been on the Skateway once at the same time as Winterlude — just walking.😎
ReplyDeleteWinterlude looks like lots of fun and lots to see and experience.
ReplyDeleteThe last photo reminds me of a Golden Age Dutch painting.
ReplyDeleteGood to see the ice sculptures again. BTW, I just checked the temperature here--13 degrees Celsius. A bit too warm for ice. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat first ice sculpture is a beauty.
ReplyDeleteThe frozen canal makes for a great winter experience!
ReplyDelete@Sharon: no doubt.
ReplyDelete@Anvilcloud: I only walk it.
@Bill: it is quite an event.
@Maywyn: I can see that too.
@Revrunner: it's a bit above freezing here today.
@Marie: it certainly is.
@RedPat: definitely.
The ice skating! 💙💙💙
ReplyDeleteMany enjoy it.
