Ice Storm Damage In The Valley

In the morning on New Year's Day, I took a stroll through Streetsville. Signs of the ice storm that hit southern Ontario before Christmas were all over the area. This included a large tree that had smashed through this fence.

Nearby, I took a trail down into the Credit River valley. The paths are snow covered this time of year, and with bent and broken trees around, it took some care moving about.

These grasses and thistles caught my eye amid the snow.

I've walked through this valley before. The ice storm did more than its share of damage. Some trees here have been damaged beyond help. Others may pull through in the spring.

More from the Credit River tomorrow...

  2. I feel bad too but I do agree with Linda's definition.

    The winter storms have done an enormous amount of damage on the coasts here. Erosion up to 6-8 metres...

  5. it took some care moving about.- you are a master of the understatement - nature has a way of coming back after these events.

  10. Really reminds you what nature can do - hope things got cleaned up OK. And you're right, we're in the midst of a winter storm again!

  11. I do not think it is something unnormal. The trees grow up, and fall dawn, natural way of live.

  12. That kind of storm is so hard on trees and plants.

  13. @Cheryl: oh yes.

    @LondonLulu: winter storms are a good thing.

    @Inna: true, but it's startling to see the aftermath of what this does to a forest.

    @Norma: very much so!

    @Sharon: some of them deal with it much easier than other trees or plants.

  14. You can still find downed branches around in the city - it will probably be spring before things are cleaned up.

  16. Sad to see so many trees damaged. It'll take time, but they'll be back.

  17. That is quite scary. It looks a little like the damage we get here whenever a hurricane or tropical storm passes through, minus the snow of course!

  18. Some of those trees in the last picture may come back, but some look severely pruned. It may not be safe to leave them the way they are.

  19. Always sad to see trees damaged. That darn 'ol cold and ice. The clean up is a job but regrowth will happen. MB

  20. Sadly, there's still a lot of debris yet to be disposed of. I think many home owners are waiting till spring.

  21. @RedPat: that wouldn't surprise me.

    @Halcyon: this is my favourite season of the year!

    @Stuart: it can take years to tally the damage, but nature does rebound.

    @Lois: there was a massive ice storm that came through my part of the continent back in the late 90s. The damage can still be seen today.

    @Mari: Quite true.

    @MB: the cleanup's going to take quite a long while.

    @Mike: yes she is!

    @EG: that's a wise decision.
