From Winter Into Spring

A reminder to those living in Ontario: Doors Open Ontario events will be happening now through the fall in cities and towns across the province. Check here for your area. And to those in the Ottawa area or coming in over the summer, two events to keep in mind. The National Gallery of Canada starts a Gauguin portraits exhibit later this month running into September, and the Canada Museum of Science And Technology has a special exhibit going on through to the beginning of September on Leonardo da Vinci. I'll be attending both at some point or another.

The transition from winter to spring occupies my attention for the next three posts. I have previously photographed Central Park in the Glebe as part of this tradition, generally once a month through the winter and ending in April. Such has been the case this time out. The park is a low lying ribbon of land that cuts through the neighbourhood. Bank Street travels through the park, and I photographed views in both directions from the street. These views were on Boxing Day while light snow was falling. This was a look to the east.

And this was the view to the west.

Late one afternoon in mid-January, I had different photographic conditions with a clear sky, looking east and west.

One day in February, I took another opportunity to photograph both directions in the park.

Here we have views from late March.

A few days made a difference. Here we see the views in early April. Pools of meltwater were forming, particularly on the west side.

And I finish with these two shots from late April with setting sun in the west. The snow was gone.

  1. Oh, my. Brrrr, it looks so cold! As kid I didn´t mind, as adult... I´m freezing just seeing snow. And it´s way too cold here, too.

  2. William - so interesting to have these shots taken from the same vantage point, but under different conditions. Nature is the best painter, isn't She?

  12. ...it's a bit hard to imagine all that snow and ice changing into green and bright colors, but of course it always does.

  15. Although winter is okay with me, I am reminded that it is too long, especially in some years.

  16. It all looks a bit chilly to me. It's a good idea to have a place which you photograph at different seasons and in different conditions. I've started several series like this but never completed one!

  21. Interesting how the rightness of light increases. We don't notice the change in light if it's day by day.
