From Winter Into Spring

This is the view of the Rideau Canal from the Mackenzie King Bridge on the last day of March. Those Canal shelters and concessions have all been removed since this shot was taken.

And yet winter was not done. This was taken on the morning of April 9th downtown, with yet more snow falling. The spire of St. Patrick Basilica is in the background.

Later that day, this was the view of the Rideau Canal at the Bank Street Bridge, looking east.

I crossed the bridge for the west view.

These were taken on the evening of April 16th. Crossing the bridge, the last light of day caught my attention.

I went over to the other side of the bridge. The moon was up in the eastern sky. The building on the high ground is a former convent that now houses the Royal College of Physicians And Surgeons, an administrative centre for medical students in the area.

I headed north down along the length of the bridge into the Glebe, taking one more shot of the last light of day.

The following day, I was passing by Dow's Lake, west of the above portion of the Canal. The ice on the lake was at a weak point. Buds were showing on this tree, and would have also been turning up in some of the trees of the Arboretum, that wooded area on the far side of the lake. The water levels in the Canal, and thus this lake, are now being slowly raised for the season.

  1. This is what I do not like about winter, the grey.

  14. These are double-transition photos, both of seasons and the changing of day into night. I think this is my favorite post of yours that I've seen. Twilight is gorgeous and crisp, snow and ice into clear water, and buds appearing finally after your long winter!
