Into The Park

I returned to Commissioners Park on Wednesday to photograph more tulips. I'm starting outside the park proper, across the street where a bed of tulips can be found near the entrance leading into the quarters for HMCS Carleton. This is a naval reserve unit that has an administration centre and drill hall here at Dow's Lake.

These large tulip sculptures are a fixture during the Tulip Festival.

Heading towards the park, I photographed two more of them along the walkway to the pavilion set at the waterfront.

And then I crossed into Commissioners Park. This first bed of tulips is dedicated in memory of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who stayed in Ottawa during the Second World War with her daughters.

During a visit in 1967, Juliana unveiled a plaque at this flowerbed. After her death, a second plaque was added in memory of her.

  1. A beautiful post! I love the sculptures, especially the first one - though... why the ocean?

  2. Someone worked hard to plant all those bulbs! The sculptures are nice enough but the real thing is far more wondrous.

  3. Ottawa is in full bloom ... and a real color explosion is coming soon! :)
    If I'm not mistaken the tulip sculptures were last year too, right?

  4. I prefer the real tulips to the sculptures.

  5. I wonder how many people outside Canada realize how synonymous tulips and Ottawa are, or in other parts of the country for that matter.

  6. And there are the colours! Wonderful, William, specially the first three shots are wonderful.
    And of course it's nice to see the way our old queen is still honoured in Ottawa.

  13. I've never been to Ottawa during the tulip festival and it looks like I won't be there this year either, however, I am enjoying your tulip pictures from a distance. It's a sunny weekend here so I'll probably go out and take some tulip pictures of my own.

  18. Such lovely tulips...though the season seems to have given you more leaf growth than the one in which your header was taken. Maybe just the angle of photo. But they are so beautiful and short lived.

  23. @DJan: I've got a lot to come.

    @RedPat: it certainly took long enough.

    @Carol: thank you.

    @Barbara: that might be the angle of the shots, plus the fact that in many cases, they're emerging as opposed to full flower. I'll be in this park at least twice more over the next week.

    @Padre: thank you.

    @Red: it is, yes.

    @Nancy: I do too.

    @Sharon: thanks!
