National Gallery Of Canada

It is time for a return visit to the National Gallery of Canada, one of the national museums in the area. This place has its roots dating back to the 19th century, and its current quarters are in Lowertown in a structure that is a work of art in and of itself.

Out front, Maman, the spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois, which visitors have come to love. Well, except for the arachnophobes.

Notre Dame is across the street.

Inside, a long ramp heads up to the main collections. Overhead was hanging a work of art, Earth And Sky, a collaboration by Shuvinai Ashoona and John Noestheden.

Here in the glass tower, a look across to Parliament Hill.

And then inside the gallery spaces. The main floor has Canadian art, and this is the first thing you see as you enter. The Canadian galleries were reorganized in 2017 to mix together indigenous art with European influenced styles.

This is Indian Psychology 101, a 1997 painting by Bob Boyer.

I leave off today with this unusual pair- moose hoof boots.

  1. In winter, do the glass towers allow enough natural light in? What about in the rooms where the art works are displayed?

    1. The glass tower does allow enough light in winter. As for specific rooms, they use recessed lighting.

  12. Moose hoof is fun to say! What a charming and safe building it appears to be. One would be very comfortable inside and feel free to let the mind and heart absorb all of the art. Count me among the fans of the lady. Spider. Always fond of those little grandmothers so wise with their knitting.... Thank you William for showing us around. Aloha
