The Dome Along The Canal

Down from Mooney's Bay, this stretch of the Rideau Canal passes through this area on its way to the university and beyond. The dome above the early fall trees is the top of  the St. John The Baptist Ukranian Catholic Shrine. I really should photograph that church sometime.

  1. That grey (pebble) pathway ... is that an old tow-path, perchance? Why did they feel it necessary to build a canal?

  2. Today we were without to see the church.

  3. I like the way they sort of packed everything they could into that name--St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic. Whew! That's a mouthful. :-)

  4. Beautiful picture with pretty autumn colors! Looks so bright in the sun. Leaves floating on water are very lovely. It's getting so cold, I imagine there will be more leaves color the water soon :-)

  5. I think you just photographed it!

  6. @Linda: thanks!

    @Julie: that's actually the top edge of the canal; on that side in that stretch of the canal there's no footpath over there. It was built after the War of 1812 as a military measure for transport within the colonies, something away from the American border for the movement of troops or goods.

    @Tomas: I'll have to remedy that!

    @Denise: thanks!

    @Luis: thank you.

    @Revrunner: it is, but it's a beautiful church too.

    @Tamago: in this case, the water levels on the canal have already been lowered for the season.

    @Birdman: no, it's an early fall shot, but the colours worked nicely.

  7. Oh yes, photograph that church. I'd love to see it.

  8. Looking forward to see that church! :)

  9. I like the autumn colours in this shot, William. For some reason we seem to have less fall colours this year in the northern parts of the Netherlands. The biggest tree in our garden is still green as well as most of the other trees in our neighbourhood.

  10. That little peek of the top of the church makes me curious.

  11. @Sharon: I'll have to do so sometime this month before winter really sets in.

    @VP: thanks!

    @Tex: thank you.

    @Marleen: I think it might have shown up in another post.... if it has, I'll add the link here or perhaps in tomorrow's post.

    @Jan: we still have some leaves on trees, but not much,

    @Judy: much of it, of course, is hidden by the leaves, but it really stands out on its property.

  12. Nice pic but definitely photograph the church!

  13. Oh yes you should, absolutely. Now that we've had a beautiful sneak peek...

  14. Love Autumn for photography. The tones are colours always so rich.

  15. So beautiful autumn colors ...

  16. It's a nice sunny day unlike this one we are having! ;-)

  17. @Cheryl: will do!

    @Krisztina: thanks!

    @Ciel: I wonder if I'll be able to get inside...

    @Jane: thank you!

    @Tahiti: those reds are something I've heard of at some point, but can't recall them now.

    @RedPat: we've had a damp day up here.

    @Norma: thanks!

  18. Very pretty looks like a nice tranquil place ! Nice shot ! Have a good day !

  19. Oh yes, I'd like to see what's under that dome!

  20. I think you'd best get on it!
    P.S. we have 3 seasons in Ontario: bugs, snow & construction, none mutually exclusive!

  21. @Randy: thanks!

    @Country Gal: thank you.

    @Mari: thanks.

    @Jen: thank you!

    @Linda: it seems I'll have to get on over there.

    @Jennifer: bugs are the least appealing.

    @Mariusz: not really on that day.

    @Lorelei: I will!

  22. Yes, take a photo of the Ukrainian shrine, William. I'd very much like to see it.

  23. Lovely autumn shot....and how nice it would be to see more of the shrine. (I bounced right past your link as I've moved backwards through your posts...trying to catch up on what I've missed.)
