Our St. Patrick

"May you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead." ~ Irish blessing

"Better fifty enemies outside the house than one within." ~ Irish proverb

"Don't give cherries to pigs or advice to fools." ~ Irish proverb

"Ladies and gentlemen, what you are seeing is a total disregard for the things St. Patrick's Day stands for. All this drinking, violence, destruction of property, are these the things we think of when we think of the Irish?" ~ Kent Brockman, The Simpsons

"Ye'll not be stopping me world domination plans, Mr. Bond! Now, where's me Lucky Charms?" ~ Lucky The Leprechaun, From Dublin With Love

Now I want to see 007 in From Dublin With Love.

Two quick shots of one of our St. Patricks in the parade- I believe there was another one further back, but I was on the move south with the parade at this point, instead of against it.

You might have noticed the building behind the float in this shot in yesterday's post as well. It is a branch for the Bank of Nova Scotia, and it dates back over 120 years. I've always liked this one; it is much more pleasing to the eye than the branches built these days.

If you haven't had a look, take a peek at my writer's blog- yesterday I posted a nod to today. Happy St. Patrick's Day! Slainte!

  1. I like the vintage buildings too. And St. Pat's of course!

    ALOHA from Honolulu

  2. Thanks for the Irish proverbs and by what you're teaching us about San Patricio. Here in Spain the saint of today goes unnoticed.

  3. Looks like the people in Ottawa know how to celebrate!

  4. It has a certain ... charm. Top o the mornin' to ya!

  5. Haha! Excellent St. Patty's day quotes.. oh no I hope Liam Neeson didn't see that :) Totally agree about the old buildings, so much more attractive William.

  6. I remember those typical old crosses I saw last summer in Ireland.

  7. Happy St Patty's day to you to William .

  8. Happy St. Patrick's Day, William. Lovely photos. I hardly see stop lights like that anymore, very cool!

  9. We don't celibrate St. Patrick's Day in the Netherlands. But I like Irish music, so I could start celibrating it for the first time by playing some nice Irish music. :-)
    Happy St. Patrick's Day for you, William!

  10. "May you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead."
    This one always brings a smile to my face.

  11. I am enjoying all the St. Patrick's parade shots. It's a really big day in some places!

  12. I always say there is a wee drop of Irish blood in all of us. Happy St. Patrick's Day.

  13. You had quite a parade! Have a fun day!

  14. nice to see st. pat riding a float. :)

  15. Happy St. Patrick's Day! I like the quotes you have at the beginning of the post.

  16. @Cloudia: that one particularly stands out against its background.

    @Tomas: some festivals are well marked- others, not so much. There's one in summer that I only know about because Little Italy makes a big to-do about it.

    @Halcyon: there'll be lots of it today.

    @Peter: thanks!

    @Grace: I figured why not run with such quotes?

    @Marianne: Celtic crosses have a lot of character.

    @Country Gal: thanks!

    @Linda: yes, they're different in Quebec.

    @Jan: I'll be listening to Irish music off and on today.

    @Birdman: it's my favourite Irish blessing.

    @Janet: it certainly is big here.

    @Gill: thank you!

    @Sharon: will do.

    @Tex: he looked the part.

    @Red: from time to time, I like adding that in.

  17. That is quite an elaborate float. I do like the building too.

  18. Oh I want to see 007 in From Dublin With Love, too!
    The building of bank is very lovely. Wow it's over 120 years old! It's great such old buildihg is kept and running. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  19. It's a big day in my house! Happy St Patrick's Day.

  20. Thanks for sharing your descriptions and your pictures. Big day I see for the Irish..
    A lot of malarky quotes Ha-ha. My Mom was English and she always quoted them.
    She mus of been part Irish.

  21. Happy St Patrick's Day !

  22. Cherries to pigs... For a second I thought you had had a Guinness too many. I hadn't scrolled down enough and thought that the branch of the bank was... what looks suspiciously like a pub to me!

    Love that Celtic cross. Joyeuse Saint Patrick !

  23. Love, love, love a parade. We didn't have one here in the very German, non-Irish town today. But we have a Suds and Spuds party at the clubhouse tonight.

  24. Happy St. Patrick's Day to you, too, William! Would really have enjoyed your parade!

  25. @Judy: I don't think I'd photographed it before.

    @Tamago: by European standards, it's brand new.

    @RedPat: thanks!

    @Carolann: somewhere way back I must have some Irish blood.

    @Anna: thank you.

    @Ciel: I'm silly that way.

    @VP: thanks!

    @Linda: I don't recall there being such parades where I grew up. One would have had to go into the city.

    @Cheryl: thank you! Slainte!

  26. Great photos of "St. Patrick" floating along. :) The Bank of Nova Scotia building is very attractive. I also prefer the older architecture.

  27. Happy St. Paddy's Day, William!

  28. I loved the quotes. Happy St. Patrick's Day.

  29. i love the Celtic cross. awesome!! ( :
    Happy Green Day!!

  30. Looks like a fun celebration! Hope you've had a fun day :)

  31. You are right. They don't build them like that any more! 'Progress,' me arse!

  32. @Geoff: it makes me wonder if they store them somewhere.

    @Pamela: I actually prefer using the formal title instead of Scotiabank, which the Marketing Chimps thought sounds great.

    @Revrunner: it was a good one!

    @Kay: thanks!

    @Mari: thank you.

    @Beth: it was quite a busy day in these parts yesterday.

    @Jen: thanks.

    @Randy: the Celtic Cross really does have a good design to it.

    @Oakland: yes, a green T-shirt and a scarf that has green in the colours.

    @Meradeth: a fairly productive day, anyway!

    @Whisk: yes, some in the morning.

    @Linda: thanks!

    @Jennifer: these days the banks look so generic.

  33. All I hear this year is about drinking and violence on St. Paddy's Day. I guess that must be in the big cities---not out in this little nook .

    1. Not here, but admittedly I don't spend time in the bars on the date.

  34. These are really good, William!

  35. Such a creative, clourful float. And love the design of the sign on the bank building.

  36. Looks like a fun parade! Ours is held on the actual day which was a work day so I missed it all this year.

    1. This year ours will be held the day before. It's generally the Saturday before. I don't think photos for this year's edition are possible, given time constraints, so I'm starting a new series the day before.
