Fountain Display On The Museum Grounds

On the Gatineau side of the Ottawa River, I paid a visit to the Museum of History, which of course is the renamed Museum of Civilization. The paths leading up to the main entrance are lined with prairie grasses.

The Museum was busier than this shot suggests, and decorated for Canada Day. The lawn down below the fountains would later in the day get filled with people, as this is an ideal spot for fireworks watching (which, by the way, I missed, assuming that the evening gusts of wind around nine would surely cancel the fireworks).

When I come here, I can never resist taking shots of the fountain against the backdrop of the Ottawa side of the river.

Taken from inside, this boat containing a wolf is set on the lower levels of the fountain terraces.The sculptures beyond share its view of the river and the Alexandria Bridge.

  3. It is deceptive (when looking at the bottom shot) to grasp how big the building is. Magnificent!

  4. Nice pictures of a beautiful place. I once visited this museum because my daughter had worked there for a few months as an internship for her study. She had helped to make an exhibition at the children's department.

  5. There were similar concerns about the Fourth of July fireworks on the Mall in D.C. Saturday night. But everything "went off" just fine, even if the ground was a little damp to sit on. :-)

  6. That seems to be a wonderful museum, I really like the architecture. Looking at the people in the second shot, it must be a very big building.

  9. I haven't seen the museum. I guess I'll have to put it on my bucket list. You have shots here that nobody else takes.

  12. @Tomas: it is.

    @VP: I always have too.

    @Lauren: and the public generally only gets into one half of it. The curatorial wing is hands off!

    @Marianne: the children's area is one part I've only been in once- so noisy because of so many kids, I came out of there with a splitting headache.

    @Revrunner: I reached home and just after ten could hear the fireworks booming from my window.

    @Jan: it is. A lot of it's being redone- the permanent exhibitions aren't open, but there were exhibits open, which I'll mention tomorrow.

    @Carolann: thank you!

    @Tanya: that seems to be a new addition. It wasn't in the water last year.

    @Red: it's well worth a visit!

    @MB: thank you!

    @Beth: thanks!

  16. I love the wolf, and it is nice to what the Canada flag as opposed to what I see here, you know, the blue and white one. LOL! It isn't that I don't like it but it would be nice to see the Canada one as well! :)

  17. In the first photo:
    The mounds of green grass echo the shape of the domes.

  23. @Halcyon: thanks!

    @Randy: it's quite distinctive.

    @Jackie: and that's not the only canoe around!

    @Linda: that terraced fountain's a real standout.

    @RedPat: the other sculptures have a very modern look.

    @Linda: I somehow doubt that Peladeau fellow marks Canada Day.

    @Janis: it does!

    @Karl: so do I.

    @Ciel: unlikely, huh?

    @EG: it is a good thing.

    @Marleen: we've had plenty of rain lately.

    @Kay: yes, it is.

  30. The grassy entrance to the museum is most appealing and a gorgeous fountain too.

  31. @Gill: if I recall the plaque properly, it has to do with a story about a man giving a ride to a wolf across open water.

    @Mari: we had plenty of water that year.

    @Jack: so do I.

    @Dianne: they do.

    @Blogoratti: thanks.

    @Grace: I love the building.

    @Jennifer: fortunately the name change hasn't been a negative one for the interior exhibits.

    @Norma: that it is.

    @Linda: definitely.

    @Carolann: so do I.

    @Gemma: I agree.

    @Whisk: it seems curious.
