Celebrating Canucks

Have a look at a guest post I wrote for Molly Jo about an ongoing series of events here involving the diplomatic community in Ottawa.

The plaza below the National Gallery of Canada was busy through the Canada Day weekend. I decided to skip heading in this time, but passed by heading out onto the Alexandra Bridge a couple of times over the weekend. In the first case, aerial lessons were being done on the apparatus.

The following day, a group of swing dancers were giving a performance for onlookers. I caught members of the troupe on another day in another location that I'll be using for the next theme day.

Heading past the Gallery on Canada Day, I paused to photograph the glass tower, then headed for the Alexandra Bridge, where views of Parliament Hill, the Ottawa River, and the Museum of History on the Gatineau side of the river were plentiful.

Today I'll leave off with this shot, taken after I'd left the Museum later in the day. This large coloured glass installation is titled Papa, and stands at an intersection close to the Museum here in Gatineau. I'll have material from the Museum later on. Tomorrow we have fireworks.

  2. The glass tower is an amazing structure - like a glass version of a stylish chateau. Interesting street scenes.

  10. Smart move to go the day before the event. You saw some of the performances and missed the crowds.

  12. @Beth: Yes, I often photograph from within the tower.

    @Jackie: thank you!

    @Red: it was nice to see things on both days. I crossed the river again on the 2nd for another visit to the Museum of History- I got into the new permanent galleries on that day- and among the things happening during the crossing was a series of flights by the Snowbirds. I hadn't ever done flight photography before, but they gave me a good number of opportunities.

    @Sussi: thanks!

    @Francisco: thank you.

    @Marleen: it was a surprise to see them. I'd caught their act just a few days earlier in the Byward Market.

    @Norma: it was quite an occasion!

  19. @Nancy: it was a blast.

    @Linda: it was a surprise to come across, but a welcome one.

    @MB: I have another take on it yet to come- I was back in Gatineau a week later and decided to walk up to the sculpture.

    @RedPat: I'll have to find out! There's not an explanation for it at the spot itself.

    @Klara: oh yes. The next time I'm in the Gallery, I'll be photographing inside there as well.

    @Bill: it's exceedingly busy right now. I'm just trying to get all these shots into place!
