The March Of A Dragon Horse

The last Saturday evening of July saw a big event in the La Machine urban theatre weekend here in Ottawa, with Long Ma the Dragon Horse making a long walk up from Ottawa's City Hall towards a confrontation with Kumo the spider, waiting on the grounds of the Supreme Court of Canada. That meant a long journey for the dragon horse (and the operators) up Elgin Street, past the War Memorial, and then along Wellington Street past Parliament Hill. I first photographed him as he was turning onto Wellington, passing by the Parliamentary block to the right housing the Prime Minister's offices.

Like many in the crowd, I kept following as the dragon horse walked up the street past Parliament Hill, stopping occasionally to look around at the crowd, sniff trees, or vocalize in different ways. I have videos here- #1#2#3#4, and #5.

Finally it was the end of his journey, and another confrontation with Kumo. This was as close as I got- the grounds around the Supreme Court were packed solid, but they're at the end of the line, lit up and facing off. This part of the performance ended with the dragon horse regaining his wings, which were being held on the grounds at the Court as part of the story. The following day would feature a final confrontation, but that was to take place at the War Museum. More from this series tomorrow.
