I have some more photos of the Rideau Canal, taken during Winterlude when the skateway was open. I start with views first to the south and then to the north from the Mackenzie King Bridge late one day, with the familiar landmarks around it.
On another day, the Canal was quiet looking east and then west from the Bank Street Bridge.
This is from another day, further down along the Canal's course headed for downtown, at a spot I'll show more of tomorrow. In the first shot, a look at the opposite side takes in the rooftop of the Immaculata High School, a large Catholic school I've never photographed.
This last pair was on the last Saturday morning of the festival, back on the Mackenzie King Bridge, looking again south and then north.
If you hadn't mentioned it was a canal I would have assumed it was a road. The ice must be very thick to take the weight of that number of people.
ReplyDelete...miles and miles of skating fun.
ReplyDeleteFolks there know how to have fun!
ReplyDeleteI would love to skate that canal, either during the daytime or evening. But it would have to be at least 70 degrees F. :)
ReplyDeleteMagnificas estas fotografias.
ReplyDeleteUm abraço e boa semana.

love seeing all the different skies ... no matter the lighting ...way fun! ( ;
ReplyDeleteLove that night time shot!
ReplyDelete@Fun60: the crews that manage the Canal over the winter need it to be of a certain thickness- not only for the people, but for the plows that keep the ice surface clear.
ReplyDelete@Tom: a whole lot of it.
@Linda: indeed!
@Lowell: and in that case it won't be open!
@Francisco: thank you!
@Beth: it is indeed.
@Marie: I did too.
This is a beautiful winter land!
ReplyDeleteInspiring photos! Skating on tbe canal looks like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the day the canal was all quiet was a week day when everyone was at work.
ReplyDeleteRideau Canal presents interesting views at all times of the year. You catch all of them.
ReplyDeleteI love the evening shot. The skaters seem to be having such fun!
ReplyDelete@Nancy: it is.
ReplyDelete@Maywyn: many people take part in it.
@Sharon: that quiet time would have been around three PM on a weekday. As I recall, the only person on the ice was beneath the bridge. It happens on a weekday when there's a lull from time to time, but it wouldn't take long for more people to show up.
@Red: it's photogenic whatever time of year.
@Jeanie: they were!
I still find it hard to imagine the cold that would freeze the canal so solidly William! Love seeing these incroyable images ✨
ReplyDeleteThose blue skies really set the winter scene off so well!
ReplyDeleteTies the whole city and region together!
ReplyDeleteThe first two photos are so wonderful the twilight and evening shots make me want to be there.
ReplyDeletecheers, parsnip
People on the canal is always a thrill to see in your pics, William!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful views of the canal. The night photo is awesome. Well done, William.
ReplyDeleteFun shots.
ReplyDeleteWonderful sky shots, I prefer the blue skies.
ReplyDeleteThe clouds in the 4th picture are awesome.
@Grace: it particularly helped that the latter half of December started a good deep cold spell, so the Canal could be opened earlier than usual.
ReplyDelete@Christine: they do indeed.
@Cloudia: it does!
@Parsnip: I love seeing this canal in multiple seasons.
@RedPat: the community certainly responds to the ice.
@Bill: thank you!
@Lady Fi: thanks!
@Jan: I thought so too.
The canal is such a wonderful urban amenity. Ottawa is so fortunate.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. One day loaded with people and then none. Good shots.
ReplyDeleteA very famous canal that provides so much fun in the winter.
ReplyDeleteSuch a popular spot though it's a surprise to see it empty on the "quiet day."
ReplyDeleteI especially like that second photo.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite place in Ottawa during winter ;-) thank you for sharing these pictures.
ReplyDeleteThat photo of the canal is so iconic to me!
ReplyDelete@Jack: we've got a lot going on here.
ReplyDelete@Mari: it can change in the course of just minutes.
@Catarina: it certainly does.
@Kay: appearances can sometimes be deceiving!
@Norma: thank you!
@Klara: you're welcome.
@Jennifer: it is indeed.
