Changes

Periodically I make use of the Bank Street Bridge for photography, and wanted to document the changing colours of fall. So today's post is all about that, looking first to the west and then to the east from the bridge as the street crosses over the Rideau Canal. These first two shots were taken in early October when the water levels were still at their summer levels. In the shots looking east, you might make out the cupola of a former convent above the trees. That houses the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, an administrative centre for medical students.

Some days later, here were the same perspectives.

Two days after that pair, I took this pair. This would have been the same day that we had the mist and fog that I mentioned in my post about the stadium at Lansdowne Park. Note the lower water levels.

The day after that the skies had more or less cleared.

Here are views from later that day.

I took more shots the following day as well.

And to conclude today, I have two final shots in both directions, taken three days later, on the 16th of the month.

  4. That's strange, always the same place, but it looks so different ! When it is covered in snow you should take another picture !

  5. The clouds and sunshine make all the difference. And I see the leaves are starting to change.

    @Italiafinlandia: I could still be keeping at this, if I was photographing it each day.

    @Nancy: thanks!

  17. Enjoyed this seasonal progression, William. It is amazing just how quickly the colors can change. We are not seeing full foliage changes here yet, but in colder reguins, many of the leaves have turned or been blown off by gusty winds.

  21. Cool series. Why does the Rideau change water level seasonally?

  22. @Marie: thanks!

    @Beatrice: we're still seeing a lot of fall colours, but I think I've probably taken my last shots of autumn colours for this year.

    @Noke: thank you!

    @Bill: time makes all the difference.

    @Catalyst: and more of that to come.

    @Cloudia: two reasons. First, this allows for any maintenance work to be done over the course of the winter. Second, because the Canal is man made, it's a measure to prevent problems in the spring. If you left it as it is, the melting ice in the spring could be problematic for flooding.
