Perspectives In The Topiaries

Picking up where I left off, this is another perspective of The Niagara Gateway.

A side path leads up behind this sculpture, giving a view of where I've been, including the Three Ships, and what lies ahead. The river and the Ottawa shoreline can be seen here as well.

A Timeless Muse: The Rose is the title of this pair of topiary sculptures, a nod to The Romance Of The Rose, an example of medieval literature. This was one of the additions for 2018.

Here we have another view back. I tried, when possible, to not photograph other visitors on the path, but sometimes it was fitting to have them in for a sense of scale.

I ascended a short staircase, photographing back the way I had come.

One of the topiaries from last year had been moved to this spot; last year the topiary designed for the Canada 150 occasion had been up here. The Poppy, Symbol Of Remembrance evokes the legacy of the First World War and the poem by Canadian warrior poet John McCrae In Flanders Fields.

  6. This whole exhibition is stunning. I can't imagine how many hours of work were spent creating these floral sculptures. How long does all this last? I'm sure there must be maintenance going on to keep it all looking fresh.

  11. @Nancy: they are!

    @Eileen: thanks!

    @Gattina: that is a small world!

    @Marianne: it really is.

    @Noke: thanks!

    @Marie: I agree.

    @Shammickite: it'll be done on the 15th of the month, and that'll be it. It's lasted all summer, and it does involve a great deal of work.

    @DJan: I agree.

    @Sharon: it's quite something to see in person.

    @Grace: thank you!

    @RedPat: they are.

    @Red: unfortunately for you to see them in person means coming pretty much in the next week. This is the last year for them. I did hear something during my visit about some of the pieces, probably the provincial and territorial ones, going out to each spot. I hope that's actually the case.

  14. Magnificent! Who would have thought Ottawa has so much art?

    What is the red arch in the background?

  15. Wow! I think the ships are the best. It would be wonderful to have a space to sit in the ship itself.

  17. @Marleen: I think they're amazing works.

    @Francisco: thank you.

    @Tom: you're welcome.

    @Sandi: it's actually part of the Niagara Gateway topiary, albeit not a plant. You walk around the back and you can frame a shot through it. I chose not to incorporate the arch itself into my shot from that point. That second one is the shot.

    @Maywyn: I imagine everything but the sails on those ships are topiary and frame.

    @Bill: thank you!
