Roses, Foxes, And The Mountie

Picking up where we left off yesterday, here is the topiary sculpture All Aboard: CPR 374, surrounded by floral growth. The 374 was the first Canadian Pacific Railway engine to take a passenger train into Vancouver all the way from Montreal in 1887. The actual 374 is on display today in Vancouver.

The Wild Rose represents Alberta. Rosa acicularis is both the official flower of the province and part of its coat of arms, and it happens to be one of fourteen rose species native to Canada. Apparently every part of the plant is useful, as First Nations peoples have known for thousands of years.

This is a new one, having had replaced a large one from the Royal Canadian Mint that was in its spot last year. The Little Prince's Rose takes its inspiration from a novella, The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

Saskatchewan is represented by Royal Canadian Mounted Police Horse And Rider. The province is home to the national force's training academy, and so Saskatchewan is home to the Mounties. This topiary features the familiar red serge of the dress uniform.

Prince Edward Island is represented by Red Foxes, a mother and pup.

  26. @Jan: it was quite a treat to come to visit this again.

@Tamago: cute seems to be the consensus for the foxes.

@Fun60: it's a lot of work keeping these up. I saw people on that kind of duty during my visit. A good part of that involves watering, but trimming is part of it too.

@Sharon: it is quite something to see in person.
