Perspectives In Winter

It's still winter, the very best of seasons, and I have some shots of the season today. This cold view in February was taken one night as I was heading home in a snowstorm. The downtown street was quiet as the heavy snowfall continued.

Here we have the Rideau Canal at the Bank Street Bridge with some skaters on their way either way. The Canal skateway officially closed for the season on March 10th, making for a good season for the skaters.

What to do with all that snow that falls? The city has snow dumps here and there where the snow gets piled up over the winter and left to melt (which can take a long while in the spring. This is one of them near my home- the piles are well over one's head by now.

This car is in Centretown. The owner obviously doesn't use their car over the winter, so it's packed over with snow. This can't be good for a car.

I happened to be up early one day at the beginning of the month and passed by Lansdowne Park around dawn. This view of the south section of the stadium is backlit by the first light of the day. This is probably the last dawn shot you'll see from me for months on end, as I see far more sunsets than sunrises. The field is home to a football team and a soccer team. While the CFL season doesn't start until June, apparently the soccer team has its home opener on the 6th of April. They're going to have to dig out the seats on both sides before that happens.

On another day I was passing by the National War Memorial downtown and decided to photograph it, with the familiar landmarks of Parliament Hill and the Chateau Laurier providing a backdrop. Work crews are busy after each snowfall clearing away enough snow, including on the wheelchair ramps, so that visitors can get up to the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier without a problem.

One evening earlier in the month I was passing by St. Patrick Basilica downtown. A statue of the Holy Mother is outside, lit up at night. She's been repaired- last year a windstorm brought down a big tree that knocked her off the pedestal and broke one of her arms.

And for today I finish with this snowy view in the Glebe, taken one day earlier in the month.

  1. That is a lot of snow! This year we had no snow at all, just a few flakes (despite I´ve been in Perth, I know this from a friend who stayed home). I feel sorry for my Nieces who love snow. And as a kid I liked it, too. Your pictures sure remind me of my childhood, thank you.

  2. Winter is so pretty in your part of the world. But way too cold for me to enjoy for any more than a week or two.

  6. Canadians must be a really hardy breed - just a small amount of snow here sends us all into a spin!

  9. Do they pre-pick a date to close the Skateway, or do they make an ad hoc decision based on current conditions?

  10. ...it's hard to believe that this will all give way to tulips!

  11. We had just one big snow, in December. A few icy ones, and they caused slippery conditions that made me stay inside. So glad to live the thousand miles or so south of you! Here the birds today are thinking of nesting up soon. But I appreciate the beauty of snow very much, just not the leavings of it.

  12. @Iris: you're welcome.

    @Joan: I love the winter.

    @Gattina: spring will slowly come. Better that it's a slow melt.

    @David: but winter is the greatest season ever devised!

    @Ella: thank you!

    @Rosemary: most Canadians handle snow well.

    @Francisco: thanks!

    @Klara: so did I.

    @Beth: quite so!

    @Anvilcloud: it's based on conditions. We had some rain a day or so before the closing date that had some impact, so the decision was made that the season would be done as opposed to a re-open when the temperatures would drop, as is usually the case when they temporarily close it.

    @Tom: yes, the tulips will come!

    @Barbara: we're still in the chill today.

  13. I think it will be melting one of these days, but that is such a lot of snow! We still have snow in places, which is really unusual for us. Many winters we don't see any at all, but this year was exceptionally cold and snowy. :-)

  14. I can't imagine having to clean all that snow from that car :) I lived in Germany for almost 6 years and we had to clear the snow from the pavement in front of our house, what a job, for people that had never seen snow before! I never became a fan.

  15. It would be nice if you could show us when the last snow of that big pile is melting away this year ...

  17. I love the first and last shots. I have childhood memories of our car being buried in snow just the like the car in your photos.

  18. So much snow! Lots of snow clearing to do. The snow can easily cover the whole car!

  19. @DJan: the regular snow melt I expect to take well into April.

    @Sami: I love the snow.

    @Jan: I'll keep that in mind. I expect that pile of snow will take into May to be gone.

    @Red: it is indeed!

    @Sharon: there are the odd people here who let that happen to their cars, I would at least cover it over with some sort of tarp.

    @Nancy: it covered every side of it but this one.

  23. Personally, I'm ready for some green grass and spring flowers. But spring only lasts a couple of weeks and then we are suddenly thrown into HOT weather.

  27. That really is a lot of snow, in my part of the UK all we had was a light dusting a little while ago.

    All the best Jan
