The New Bridge

A reminder to members of City Daily Photo: the theme day for April is Yellow. And last evening I switched out my header image for something of a spring sensibility, though it'll be May before we see tulips here. The shot was taken last spring in Major's Hill Park.

I introduced you to the Flora Bridge during my Winterlude series. This is a new pedestrian bridge scheduled to open later in the year. It spans the Rideau Canal between the Glebe and Old Ottawa East. It is named in honour of the late Flora MacDonald, a politician and humanitarian who served as a cabinet minister in the Clark and Mulroney governments, and who lived in the area for many years. I took these shots last August one day when I was in the area and the bridge was under major construction.

A few days later I was over at the opposite side and took the opportunity to photograph the bridge from here.

By contrast, these shots from February were taken during my walk along the Canal with skaters. The bridge spans the Canal quite gracefully. I'm looking forward to walking across when it opens later in the year.

  3. :-) Seeing your new header I really said out loud, "awwww!".
    It´s beautiful!
Bridges always remind me of the two semesters statics when at uni. Always on Fridays after lunch when I was on the road in my mind anyways (I passed, though)...

  8. Those tulips in the first photo are quite something - a taste of what Spring holds in store. The only Flora Macdonald I'd heard of before was the Scottish Jacobite heroine - quite a name to have to live up to.

  24. The first several shots show clunky squared off supports, and blue fencing, then the lovely "v" supports still have the blue fence, then finally there is silver/white with the "v" supports. It is already bridge with different faces! Thanks for tulips for our imagination!
