In Commemoration

St. Vincent de Paul is a Canadian Catholic charitable organization that works with people in a difficult situation. A good part of their funding comes from their thrift shops. I was out in Hintonburg on some occasions in late October, and passed by one of their shops. The front windows had displays set up for Remembrance Day. A sign in the window noted that nothing in this display was for sale. Uniforms, photographs, books, paintings, and more were to be found. Here's some of it, and I have more for tomorrow.

  1. Even though these items are not for sale I wonder if they were donated.

  2. Unusual to find a display like that in a charity shop and a lot of effort has gone into getting it all together. I noticed that the buses in Cambridge yesterday were flashing up "We will remember" on their destination boards.

  3. That's what they have in the UK the charity shops but not organized by a church. In Belgium it starts right now.

  6. Quite a collection - and a statement, not being for sale. You cannot sell respect.

  12. @MB: I suspect they're on loan from staff members, their family, or the Legion.

    @John: I didn't notice that about buses here, but it wouldn't surprise me.

    @Gattina: there are these ones, the Salvation Army ones, and others, but I'm not sure about the other thrift shops in how they're organized or if any of their proceeds end up going into charitable work.

    @Italiafinlandia: they're around in many a place.

    @Ella: I found it quite fitting for this time of year.

    @Iris: yes, I was surprised to see the sign.

    @Francisco: thank you.

    @Janis: I had a peek inside. It was a good sized shop.

    @Maywyn: I was impressed.

    @Eileen: thank you.

    @Tom: definitely.

    @Beth: the paintings impressed me.

    @Marie: very much so.

    @Anvilcloud: I wonder if it was this outlet. I do know that this one has moved from its original location in Hintonburg, but the presence in the neighbourhood is still the same.

  15. Artifacts displayed make it easier for us to think about what it was really like during the war. I remember some of it but from a child's point of view. I was 5 when the war ended. I remember when the war ended.

  16. We had a SVDP store in Florida where I used to live. I love thrift shops. The window display was very thoughtfully done, and I also had a gulp of emotion in seeing the hats. We've seen boots and helmets (mainly for Viet Nam vets) but those dress hats speak of the awful cruelty of war to me.

    @RedPat: they did.

    @Red: artifacts do help the process.

    @Barbara: and here I thought it was exclusively Canadian.

    @Jan: definitely not.

    @Sharon: that it is.

    @Carol: thank you!
