My first stop for this excursion into Gatineau Park was Pink Lake, nestled deep in the Hills. A lookout built over the lake gives views on two levels of the lake, which has a hiking trail to get around as well.
Pink Lake, named after a family that lived here in the early 19th century, is a rarity in lakes- a meromictic lake. These are lakes that have water layers that do not mix. I grew up near one in southern Ontario, Crawford Lake. The lake also tends to look green as summer gives way to fall due to algae in the water, but it's not polluted as some might otherwise think. Its primary concern is the effects of erosion into the water, and so the shorelines are carefully monitored, and from time to time the trail is readjusted. A set of panels are up here on the platforms.
More views from above.
I decided to take a panoramic shot.
Tomorrow, we'll descend to the lakeshore.
You found great colors at Pine Lake. What a perfect time of year to go there.

DeleteThe colour hasn't been stupendous this year, partly due to dull weather, but seeing the colour in any form is still most pleasant.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed.

DeleteThis lake is surreal in Autumn. The term meromictic is something new I learnt today.
ReplyDeleteIt's an unusual term.
DeleteNow you have disappointed me. I was expecting a lake with pink water. I have seen dry lakes of pink salt and the waters of Lake Eyre made pink where lots of crustaceans have gathered. Nonetheless your lake is pretty.
ReplyDeleteVery much so.
DeleteThe colours of the trees, magical! Inspired a deep melancholy, I do so miss the northern hemispheres autumns.
ReplyDeleteI love autumn.
