Religious

A reminder to members of City Daily Photo: the theme for May 1st is Very Small.

I begin today with Scenes From Ovid's Metamorphoses, circa 1525, by Antonio Di Donnino Mazzieri.

Blessing Christ is from the workshop of Bellini, circa 1500.

Another altarpiece, this is The Assumption Of The Virgin, by Neri Di Bicci, done from 1455-56.

The Virgin And Child is a sculpture dating around 1485 by Gregorio Di Lorenzo.

The Christ Child And The Infant John The Baptist comes from the workshop of Botticelli, around 1490.

And to close things out, two paintings that were originally two of six, meant as panels on two wedding chests, circa 1475. We start with Esther At The Palace Gate, by Filippino Lippi, under the direction of Botticelli.

And this is by Botticelli himself- The Triumph Of Mordechai, From The Book Of Esther.

World Art

On the landing outside the entrance to the world art galleries is this large steel sculpture. Wagon I is by David Smith, created from 1963-64.

In we go. Much of early art is religious in nature, and that's true in these galleries.

Here we see Triptych Of The Holy Virgin And Child Enthroned With Saints, by Jacopo di Cione, dating circa 1370-80.

This altarpiece is The Virgin And Child With Saints, done 1476-77 by Benozzo Gozzoli.

Blessing Christ comes from around 1500, and is by a follower of Bellini.

This dramatic work is Saint Jerome In Penitence, circa 1500-07, by Bartolomeo Montagna.

A look down into the garden courtyard. This visit was during the March break here, so there were children below doing drawing exercises with parents and staff.

This plate is Italian, dating around 1500.

The Gesture

I start today with two paintings by F.H. Varley of the Group of Seven, both portraits of the same woman, with the same name, painted a year apart. Vera is the mutual title, with the work from 1929 at left and the follow up from 1930 at right.

Girl With Plant is a 1933 painting by Will Ogilvie.

Two paintings hang together. Self Portrait is a circa 1929 painting by Lilias Torrance Newton.

This is her 1942 painting Portrait Of Frances Loring.

Gordon Davies painted Gesture and Elizabeth in 1936, depicting a fellow artist.

This is Gesture, by Elizabeth Wyn Wood.

Adrien Hebert painted Montreal Harbour, circa 1927-30.

We close out today with Tadoussac, a 1935 painting by Charles Comfort. A few years after painting this, Comfort was a commissioned war artist, embedded with Canadian forces fighting to free Europe.
