The Countess Tolstaya

Elizabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun painted Countess Anna Ivanova Tolstaya in 1796, during the artist's exile from France.

Landscape With Castle dates to the 1830s, by Georges Michel.

John Hoppner painted John Hookham Frere in 1806.

Sir Alexander Mackenzie is a portrait by Thomas Lawrence, depicting the fur trader who went up the  Canadian river that now bears his name to reach the Arctic Ocean, and then travelled across the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, a decade before Lewis and Clark.

Another giant of history. The Tomb Of General Brock, Near Queenston, Lake Ontario depicts the final resting place of Isaac Brock, the British general who was gunned down in battle at Queenston Heights during the War of 1812. Today the monument is still to be found there. The painting by Thomas Cole dates to 1830.

This is an oil painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner. Shoesburyness Fisherman Hailing A Whitstable Hoy dates to 1809.

Salisbury Cathedral From The Bishop's Grounds is a beautiful 1820 oil painting by John Constable.

  8. Such substantial subjects of those paintings. One wonders what kind of lives they lived. Of course the Marine painting captured me immediately
